Pre-race routine:

Day 2 of the Revolution. After the Olympic on Saturday, I hung around the finish line a bit and cheered folks in and caught up with a bunch of my teammates, before racking heading back to transition packing up my stuff and heading back to Danbury for a shower and food. Got my bottle together and went to bed early. Have to get up and get to the park early to get in the park side lot. Got that accomplished and pumped up my tires and hung out with the other Revolutionaries. 16 of the 28 signed up were here for day two (plus Tim doing both Aquabikes) . Got tri-slided up and got the wetsuit on and headed to the beach, guess I looked way too serious as Eric and Laura started giving my the business until I smiled. Day 2 is never a race for me just try and be steady.
Event warmup:

Got a similar swim in as yesterday, to the first buoy and back. Then waited for the 4th wave.

Comments:

Very large wave. Ended up have to go far right and a bit back again since there was a huge clump to the left. My AG was so large we were split into 2 waves but we still had a ton of people. Got swam over a few times early until I found some clean water but drift way inside and had to turn hard to get back over and went right into the heavy traffic. The sunward leg I again had my issues. I couldn't find the buoys to save my life and after the second buoy which I meralculously m=nearly hit before I saw it, I drift way, way inside and took a group of folks with me, until the kayaks had to direct me back to the course. Thus I had a ahrd tight turn at the second trun buoy and got beat up there as we had a log jam. Leg back in wasn;t bad but I was glad to be done. Swam a whole lot extra.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to swim straight.

Slow jog up the chute to transition and to my rack. Took my time and battled with my SOLE socks again. Super comfortable by double layered just doesn't work with wet feet. Bunched up several times and took 3 attempts to get it right. Sunscreened up and loaded up and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Save the SOLEs for a stand along running event. Went from 67 to 77 in AG and 303 to 364 OA

THe goal for this ride was to stay steady and ride the hills and enjoy the scenery and smile a lot. I think I accomplished that. Managed to keep a steadily increasing pace but very consistant. Road the early hills well and stayed in the saddle for the steep hill. My back really started to bother me from mile 10 on which made it very hard to stay in the aero bars, fortunaelty since you are climbing so much I wasn't in them all that often. Did the Cat 3 climbs well, enjoyed the awesome downhill to Blackrock Lake, talked to lots of people on the climb back up on the other side and encouraged a fellow Revolutionary to stick with it over the last 6 miles. Good steady ride which was exactly what I asked for.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more and eat more. With all the climbing I was negligent with my nutrition. Got to break and get that in or the wheel fall off at some point later in the race.

Comments:

Was very unsteady and sliding around getting off the bike. Did not feel good, then over shot my rack. But once I got racked it was a good smooth transition and I grabbed a drink and loaded a Perfromance energy blend and tri slided my feet and did sunscreen and I stayed steady in my AG
What would you do differently?:

See yesterday's comments about practicing dismounting. I was cramping trying to swing my leg over the bar, not too good. stayed in 76th place in my AG and actually gain spots OA 292nd to 284th.

The run started out Ok. My legs were heavy but came in and I got going at a slow but steady tempo. Handled the first two hill and then shuffled up the K swiss hill well and then up and down to the turnaround. At that aid station I let myself walk to get enough ice and water, but I shouldn't have as I let the magic smoke out. I walked each aid station after that and lost the battle to allow me to walk some of the hills on the back side of the lake. I did suck it up and run the entire finale hill and to the park. Slow time but better than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Run wasn't pretty as is fairly normal for the finally of the Revolution. legs are wicked tired at that point so it is not unusal to struggle, but I made it through the toughest section before I popped and I actually did get it back together before the end unlike last year. 76th to 81st in AG and 284th to 345th OA.
Post race
Warm down:

Got my cold towel, got some food and then crashed on a picnic bench until I could drink. Didn't feel much like eating but I did. Hobbled up to transition and caught up with some of the other Revolutionaries including the dude I helped on the bike. He had his best run ever in a HIM and was very happy, so I did good. Put my bike and transition bag in the car (after getting a head rush standing up, and put on my finisher's shirt and went and got some ice cream and finally rode the wooden roller coaster (as we get free admission to the park and I never took advantage of it. Front seat.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Doing the Revolution is not about speed. 2012 was a great year with my 5:50 but today was a good effort. Got to keep up with my nitrition better which is likely why I fell apart in the second half of the run.

Event comments:

Rev 3 Quassy is such an awesome race. I rode some roller coasters, ate ice cream and then headed home since I had to go to work Monday morning.

Course: THis is the greatest bike course. Extreemely hard, but not too hard, and very scenic. 2 cat 3 climbs and 5 cat 5 for around 5000 feet of climbing. Take the opposite direction out of the park and around the lake from the Olympic then meet up with the Olympic and ride the steep hill again and then out to Blackrock Lake Park and a monster downhill, then thru the twon and to the four tiered 6 miles Cat 3 climb to mile 28, then more roller to the down and up hill at mile 40 amd then back to town on the Olympic course and back around the lake the way you came to finishe with another 1 mile climb to the end. Breathtaking ride 50 mph decents and climb using the granny gears.

Course: After an evil run you get the hardest run course. Start off same direction as the mile some first mile downhill then turn and climb most of mile 2 then down hill to the gravel road and then up the paved/unpaved "K-swiss hill and a mile plus of straight climbing, to the neighbor hood and a slight reprieve with a downhill to the turnaround but you come back up and them up again. WOrk the way around the lake to the Olymoic bike course and run the last hill on the bike at Mile 7 then around to the main street and past the start but you turn away and follow the start of the Olympic run to the turn around except you go further. However you skip the hilly segments o the Olympic and head back where you came until you reach the finale hill and go up to and under the road again and up to the top turn and run out to the main road and then out to the Park and to the finish line.
