Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:00 with my husband calling me on cellphone. Had a fairly good night sleep. Made some hotel coffee that was really bad and decided to go to DD and get real coffee and a bagel. We did that and then my son and I went down and got some of the complimentary continental breakfast in the hotel lobby. Met the Capt and PollyC, ate some stale raisonbran and oj (bad idea).

Headed back up stairs to get it together for the race.
Event warmup:

No warmup really. Just got my transition area set up and then spent alot of time traveling and waiting at the portolets. (yeah, the raisinbran). Hung out with my BT peeps ( i love you guys : )). Got ready for the swim.
Swim
  • 30m 11s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

I did better than expected with the swim. I have to wonder how much better I could be if I got more training in. I have earned a wetsuit with this race and will be looking to buy one for next season.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Maybe site a little better. Maybe push a little harder toward the end.
Transition 1
  • 04m 27s
Comments:

Okay, this transition took way too long. Thought someone had stolen one of my socks. It got knocked out of my shoe and was hidden from view. Spent too much time trying to find it. Too much time putting gloves on, but really thought I would need them for this distance.
What would you do differently?:

Hurry it up a bit!! Make sure my socks are tucked securely in my bike shoes
Bike
  • 1h 21m 52s
  • 25.9 miles
  • 18.98 mile/hr
Comments:

Legs felt like bags of sand when I started out on the bike. I think my body was resonding to the chill in the air and I was starting to stiffen up a little with the cold air on my wet body. I started to feel better around mile 6. Passed quite a few folks and then got passed by quite a few guys from the 35-49 wave. Saw Rob whiz by. I gotta get a tri bike!!!

Polly came up behind me in mile 23/24. Was surprised cuz I thought she was way ahead of me. She looked good on her new rig! We duked it out to the finish and almost got run over by a cop car. : )
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. This was not one of my stellar bike splits. I did try to back off a little so I could be sure to get through the run. I did not feel like it was my best bike effort.
Transition 2
  • 02m 35s
Comments:

This transition went okay until I got ready to enter the run start chute and the official asked me where my race number was. DOH, I forgot to put on my race belt! Had to run back to my bike and grab it out of my bag. Polly was right there and was going to wait for me. GO Polly GO.

What would you do differently?:

Not forget my race belt!
Run
  • 54m 55s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Okay, this run was awesome for me. My time on this 10k was pretty much equivalent to my best straight 10k times earlier in the season. To run this well after swimming and biking has me really stoked. My stategy was to go really easy coming out onto the course. I maintained a slow and steady pace for the first 4 miles. Ran with Trifury guy for a bit unitl he dropped at a water station. Then kept pace with another TeaminTraining guy through miles 2 and 3. He dropped me at a water station too. I caugth up with same guy in mile 5 or so and he said some encouraging words as I whizzed by him. I felt really strong coming up on mile 5 and increased my pace as some younger gals where running by me. I wanted to finish in 3 hours and at this point I knew I could come in under 3 so I was really motivated to keep my focus and get to the finish. Heard BTers cheering for me as I got to the finish. Awesome!! I felt really strong toward the end of this run and feel like it was probably my best run this season both tri and straight road race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing! Perfect
Post race
Warm down:

Ran into Mark (Stone) and Dan (Baitboy) and chatted/congratulated with them. Got some water and juice and then went to cheer for other BTers finishing up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to get more swim training.

Event comments:

This was a great race and well worth the trip up from CT—made all the more meaningful because of all the BT participation. This was really a great time and I look forward to doing it again next year.

I most feared the swim. This is the discipline that is most difficult for me to find time and place to train for and this would be the longest swim I had ever done EVER! My goal was to get through it. I DID! The thing about swimming for me is that I am able to get into a rythm and just keep going — like a slow plodding machine. My ability to persist is what gets me through the distance. I feel that I could not have done the swim any better than I did. Felt really good the whole distance and just tried to keep it slow and steady the whole way. Saw a few red caps on the way in from the wave ahead. Came out of the water feeling a little lightheaded and tried hard not to face plant going up that crazy little hill. Was chilly waiting for the swim to start, but it was a non issue once I got going. Passed a few gals wearing wetsuits :)
