Swim
Comments: didn't feel well for the previous few days. decided to race anyway. Hands down my worst race swim. Right hamstring cramped so violently early on that i had to stop in the water and try to stretch it. HR was north of 170. Seriously considered drifting over to the med crew and calling it quits. Just told myself to take it easy the rest of the way and re-asses my body on the beach What would you do differently?: Everything. I didn't swim as much as I simply prevented a drowning! Must have been a little sick. I've always felt comfortable in the water. Not today though. Transition 1
Comments: Aside from massive cramping of my right hamstring exiting the water, this was OK. Bike
Comments: cruised for first half averaging 18.5mph. Got passed by quite a few people. Didn't think there were that many left behind me. But relays went off behind me. At mile 28 I dropped the hammer and went. Nobody passed the rest of the way. Probably picked off 100 or more on the way in. I was just pissed in general from the swim, so I said 'screw it' and just went hard. What would you do differently?: nothing. Pretty pleased with 19.7mph Transition 2
Comments: No big deal here. Took my time though. What would you do differently?: nothing Run
Comments: was curious how my hard bike would effect the run. As it turns out, it didn't effect it much. Pretty much the same crappy pace my 200lb frame always goes. As this wasn't an A race for me, I was experimenting a little with the bike and run. What would you do differently?: Not sign up for any more halfs. 3 in one season is enough. Post race
Warm down: went home. What limited your ability to perform faster: definatley a little under the weather and I had been training hard previous to this race. It just fit in the schedule so I viewed it as more training. No taper of any kind. Training race for IM Canada on August 27th. Event comments: OK race. Of course I've been spoiled with the Ford 70.3 races for my first 2 halfs. Compared to those, this was a let-down. But it was OK. Plenty of aid stations and volunteers. The people of Racine were great with their lawn sprinklers dropping water on the the run course. Ran through probably 20 of them. Last updated: 2006-07-30 12:00 AM

Up at 4am. Gatorade energy and cliff bar. Water in the car ride. On site at 6am. Body marking and chip pick up. Set up transition. Sipped some more energy drink.
Walked mile down the beach to swim start. Warmed up with wetsuit on for about 10 minutes.
