Pre-race routine:

Show up at race, watch half iron start an hour before us. Got some good karma when a girl in the half iron was looking for a pump for her tires about 5mins before her race started. I told her to go to the swim start and i would take care of her bike. I found a floor pump and inflated her tires since i only had a small hand pump on my bike.
Event warmup:

a (very) little swimming as usual, about 50-100m
Swim
  • 15m 6s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 01s / 100 meters
Comments:

A pretty good swim, I was happy with it. Saw the chop was going out and across to our right from the start to the 1st buoy so i swam toward the left of the buoy and it worked out really well and i hit the 1st buoy in good time. Made the 130 or so degree turn and then had to head straight against the current and this leg was a little tough. Some rollers came in from boat wakes and breathing was made a little more difficult. Finally hit the last turn buoy and headed toward shore fighting a little with the current that was now coming from my right but not so bad. Felt like i went a little too hard the last 100m or so, probably because i saw others with me and i wanted to stay with them. I stood up too soon and had to walk throught thigh deep water which takes a lot of effort, i should have swam as far as i could and taken it easy, would have probably took 5 seconds more but came out of the water with a HR about 30 beats lower! When i hit the lap button on my watch i saw my HR was 181 and my avg was 161 for the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Ease up last 100m
Transition 1
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

HR was high, jogged up beach to T1, stripped wetsuit easily, helmet & shoes on pretty fast and off to mount line. Took a couple extra seconds getting into my pedals than it should have
Bike
  • 30m 39s
  • 15.5 kms
  • 30.34 km/hr
Comments:

Although my HR was high i took it easy on the bike course, my legs only suffering a little bit on some of the uphills. Tried to get my HR down but had trouble with this (again). Even on nice sections when i got down into the 140s it would immedieatly spike back into the 170s as i hit a hill. Did not like this course at all between the length (only 15.5k), crap pavement and constant hills & turns.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Could not find my spot, finally rammed my bike on the rack and took off helmet and shoes, walked around and found runners. Prolly lost about 10 seconds but as it is happening it feels like forever.
Run
  • 20m 54s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 11s  min/km
Comments:

Had a great run. Even with a high HR on the bike, i came in to T2 feeling fresh. Easy to do with only a 15.5k bike. Left T2 and got up to my pace I wanted right away. Breathing hard but feeling good. Very mild stitch was felt below the surface but not at all bothering me. I had about 500mls of gatorade on the bike and i felt i could do the run with no fluids. I think my fluid intake was executed very well. The stitch i might have had was just from going too fast, not from too much or too little drink. I was following a guy who came off the bike with me and he was very slowly taking ground from me. I let him go and decided if he faltered i would get him on the way back, but i am not chasing now. Passed a couple of people on the way out. The run course was pretty empty because of the race being moved back a day. I think it ended up with probably about half the participants they would have started with on Saturday. Hit the turnaround and was pleasantly suprised to see 10:28 for my split time. Still felt good, picked it up a tiny bit and my stitch became a little stronger. Still was able to maintain my pace pretty much the entire way in. Nobody infront of me to catch until i saw someone in the last 500m or so but he was pretty far out in front. Stayed strong the last 100m and right through the finish. This was a 5k PB for me, but then again i have never run a 5k race, only in tris and in training.
Post race
Warm down:

A very short race, just a couple cups of water. Felt fine after a couple minutes. Ended up going on a nice hilly bike ride later in the evening.

Event comments:

Good job by the RD getting the race on after a day delay due to lightning. But it was too bad for the people who couldnt stay and race on Sunday.

161HR avg on swim, but 181 as i hit 'lap' on exiting the water. Oh oh.
Suit: fullsuit
Course: a triangular loop with a shallow 50m into shore where you dont know whether to swim or trudge through the water. I trudged, bad idea as my HR rocketed up too high.

Course: Pretty technical out and back with rough pavement on much of the course. Lots of short steep hills. Course was cut back significantly when race got postponed by a day to avoid highway. So we missed out on the fastest part of the course and best pavement.

Course: This section of the course was 5k pretty much dead on. I know this area very well and it is the same run course as Dave's Trysport sprint which is measured very well. Out and back on fitness trail, very flat on crushed stone. Nice course. Shady too even though sun wasnt really out.
