Run
Comments: I randomly met Andy Shulha in the starting chute and we ended up running together. Kind of crowded at first and we took it slow for a couple of miles and then picked it up. Really picked up the pace starting at mile 10. At one point Andy said go ahead I'm going to fall back but about a mile later he passed me. I let him go at that point and didn't pass him back until about .75 miles left. I finished strong and beat him by 16 sec. Post race a spectator about my age wanted to take my picture. When I asked why me, he said I looked so good finishing strong. It really helped running with Andy and talking the whole race, the miles just flew by. Watched pace, did not watch HR (maybe should have). Possibly could have gone a little harder early and still had a strong finish. Didn't drink a whole lot, it helped that it was cool. What would you do differently?: My best case scenario was under 1:40, so I met that goal. Very pleased with the result. Garmin did have distance as 13.19 and my pace ay 7:27, I guess looking back it would have been nice to get 7:30 or under avg pace. Post race
Warm down: Talked to Andy, Jennie and Addie. It was still not very warm and I was getting chilled since I was so sweaty. Grabbed my bag and headed to the car to change. Never considered staying for awards but I did up 3rd in M55-59. Barb talked to someone doing flu shots and she said Final Stretch would mail awards Event comments: Final Stretch did a good job. Drove over the morning of the race. Left about 5:05 and got there 6:30. Honey Nut Cheerios for breakfast, stopped in Mankato and got a banana. Drank a 32oz powerade. Bused us from downtown & finish line to start line at MSU. Cold in the parking lot. Packet pickup in the lot & bag drop. Went to football field and watched 10K start at 7:30. Port-a-potties behind stands and out of wind.
Not much. Jogged from football field to start, Took off zubas and hooded sweatshirt and did the bag drop.
I wore my training Brooks rather than my racing Asics due to my recent sore knees. Compression sleeves, compression undershirt, arm warmers under a long sleeve red top and an Ironman hat.
