Swim
Comments: I think I lucked out on this swim. We took off every 10 seconds and the person behind me was not there. So I had a 20 second gap behind me to start. That guy was super speedy and passed me and the girl in front of me by lap 3... the rest of the swim there was no one behind me for at least a 50 yards (kept the pressure off). I tried to pass the girl in front of me a few times, but could never get a good angle at the turnarounds. Oh well.... I focused on breathing and "taking it easy" so I wouldn't burn out. Overall I was very happy to be out of the water in 10:18!!! YAY What would you do differently?: I want to get with a coach again to help on my stroke and do more drills. But.. no complaints!!! Transition 1
Comments: I was worried about wind/cold on the course so I threw on a cycling jacket. Glad I did, but I can't believe watching the elites take off shirtless in just their swim trunks. I guess if you're on the course for 25 minutes instead of 45, it makes a difference... HA!!!! So overall I think I did good. Waiting to see the times posted. My mount was after the timing mat so it won't show here, but I SUCKED at getting clipped in. I NEVER have this problem, but it cost me ~30 seconds trying... it was nuts!!! I have no clue why either. Nerves? Anxiety? Rubber legs out of the pool? Oh well What would you do differently?: Clip, Clip, Clip, Clip.... And I won't have to worry abuot jackets the rest of the season. I might try biking without socks for future races so I'll practice that way and see if I like it. Bike
Comments: No complaints here. I felt like I was putzing at times. Passed some people... got passed by others... I wasn't all that good at drinking on the bike so I slowed down to do that (good excuse to catch my breath, too). My time seemed good so I'll take it. Except... clipping in (read T1). This will reflect on my time here since it was after the timing mat. What would you do differently?: Clip Clip Clip.... With more training time, my legs will get stronger and my gear shifting will improve. No biggies here, but always room for improvement. Transition 2
Comments: No biggie here. Glad I put Yankz on my shoes last week. This was a non event. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I'll try sockless running too and see if I like it for future races. Run
Comments: I was pretty winded but kept going as much as I could. There were 4 hills on the course (2 at the gravel turnaround and 2 on the sidewalk turnaround). I took that opportunity to walk when I got too tired. The walk was just as fast as if I pretended to run. :) Considering that I was very happy with my time!!! What would you do differently?: I need to run more. I was good for my standards, but I want to run the whole course and improve my speed. Probably my biggest area for improvement (and I've come a long way already...) Post race
Warm down: Here's the funny part.... after my first 5k last fall I could barely move afterwards, wanted to puke, and had bad cramps (and finished in 34:45). Now after 90 minutes of endurance and a 31:00 5k run I still felt fresh!!! YAY!!! That means I was ready for the race. (and I probably left stuff out there) but that's ok for me. For a first tri I was super impressed that my training paid off and I wasn't winded. I walked around with some friends and stretched out a bit. Ate a banana and soda (who has soda after a race????? that was odd) and some pretzels. I then waited for Wendy and cheered her on!!! YAY WENDY!!!! What limited your ability to perform faster: Clips... socks... (easy ones) Swim technique, bike strength, and run endurance (tougher ones) Event comments: Great pool! Great atmosphere! I like the transition area and the bike course. The run course was STUPID... seriously... stupid.... The event bags were very poor, too. But.... I HAD A BLAST AND I'M A TRIATHLETE!!!! YAY!!!!!!!! This was a great race for my first. The pool swim forces a single file start so I had plenty of time to watch the elites and friends start. irst swimmer was off at 9:00 - I went at 10:19. We went out and watched a lot of T1 and some T2 before my start time came. It was also great to be able to socialize with friends (from BT, the Y, and new ones we just met). That helped calm any fears.
We got there aruond 7:45 and had plenty of time to set up in transition. Due to the swim starts we were numbered based on swim times so Wendy and I went down to the first racks to see how the elites were set up. And other experienced triathletes. Everyone around us was very helpful. Plus wendy was only ~15 feet away from my spot.
This was kind of hard to do with the conditions. Since I had such a delay I didn't want to get in the racers way. I did some stetching and tried to keep my legs loose. I did 2 laps in the pool (warm up section) when it was my time to enter.
