Sunny
Total Time = 1h 18m 37s
Overall Rank = 311/705
Age Group = 20-24
Age Group Rank = 8/11
Pre-race routine:

Ate a gel, drank some water
Event warmup:

Short out-and-back in the lake.
Swim
  • 10m 30s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 06s / 100 meters
Comments:

I kept stopping when I bumped into people's feet. It was almost impossible to get around them - it was like a wall in front of me. I was scared I would be kicked in the face. The lake was also sort of gross - there was some sort of weedy moss I kept getting tangled around my arms... I tried not to think about it and kept tearing it off.
What would you do differently?:

Start a little further out front because I got caught in the back.
Transition 1
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

I tried to cut some time off transition by leaving my shoes clipped in, but I'm not used to riding without socks so I put socks on and had to run through water (on the ground from the swim leg) to get out of transition. This left my socks soggy and they started rubbing during the run. In my excitement, when I got on the bike I didn't keep my free foot on top of the shoe as I tried to put the other foot in its shoe so that shoe kept hitting the road. I looked stupid, but I did figure it out eventually.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time practicing jumping on the bike.
Bike
  • 38m 16s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.82 mile/hr
Comments:

I passed a lot of people here - this is definitely my strong sport. If I can get my speed just a little faster...
What would you do differently?:

Practice more hills and sprinting, I could have been faster.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Almost missed the run exit - I heard "left" and thought they were telling me to move to the left. A volunteer jumped in front of me and waved me in the right direction. I don't know what I was thinking.

I took a cup of water and proceeded to choke on it, haha. Just one more goof on my part.
What would you do differently?:

Pay attention?
Run
  • 26m 30s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm training for a marathon so I've been doing mostly slow runs and my time shows that. Still, I felt pretty strong.
What would you do differently?:

Eat the gel I planned on eating
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around the tents

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of experience swimming with others

Event comments:

The 20 min walk to/from the race wasn't fun and the transition area wasn't secured. Otherwise it was a fun race.
