Pre-race routine:

Did this at the end of a 12 week build (and two week longer, more intense phase), so didn't have high expectations other than a fun venue. Figured I'd get a couple miles on the way to the race and run ~4 after, with the race accounting for my planned intensity (6.2 miles hard vs. 8x9' moderate - close enough). Parked a couple miles away, jogged to the race, ran around the city and then jogged back (plus a little).

What a great venue! They close the whole blinkin' downtown and let you run around it. Waaaay cool. Very well organized, lots of fans, just terrific.

Only bummer was that Kim's hip still hurt, so it was a solo effort.

Placed way better than I expected in the field and ran faster than I thought. Was only about 30" off my previous PB (for which I trained and tapered a couple years ago). So, very happy with that, too!
Event warmup:

Parked about 2 miles from race and ran to the start. 4-5 pickups at mile 1.5 then eased on in to corral A and moseyed up to the front. Took a half a GU about 10' prior to the race and bobbed around waiting for the gun.

Comments:

Started in the first corral, which was about perfect, as maybe a couple dozen people passed me in the first half mile and then I was in with others running my pace. Held a very steady pace through the race.

I'd aaaaaalmost forgotten how tough a 10k is mentally. Good to experience that again, as this will be a much more full racing season (I plan/hope) than last year.

Still had a little for a slight kick at the end, but not much - so it felt about perfectly paced for the day.

Very happy with this race and the outcome! Plus, running through a closed off city center? Awesome!
What would you do differently?:

Not much, except maybe not kick at the end (right quad is sore today, and I think that bit of exuberance might have contributed!). The outcome was even a bit better than I expected for the combination of time of year and where it fell in my training block, so I am quite happy with the race/execution and such.
Post race
Warm down:

Came across the line. Walked while my heart re-entered my chest. Then got a couple cups of NUUN, a power bar and a bottle of water (drank half of that) and milled about in the new, luxurious (and water wasteful) grass at Auditorium shores. Then jogged for 4 miles to get my miles for the day and warm down post-race. Still LOTS of folks on course 2 hours after the start (like THOUSANDS)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Only a 12 week build (and a tri build at that), with no taper (planned that way). The biggest thing was a summer and fall with really minimal training (move, new job, etc.). So, could have had a bigger base - but that's a minor thing.

Event comments:

What a great race! All the downtown Austin roads are closed for this; it's super-well organized; tons of fan support; HUGE field; great post-race activities... Just a terrific 10k!

Course: Hillier than I thought. Or rather that the few hills were bigger than I remembered from driving them. Terrific downtown venue with ALL the roads closed for us. Way cool.
