Pre-race routine:

Typical, running a bit late. No warm up, but swim was my fastest yet and I felt good. Weather and temp couldn't have been better.
Event warmup:

None, other than hauling the kids around in a hectic craze. I think that counts for something.
Swim
  • 05m 50s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a pretty good swim for me. Definitely a huge improvement over last year.
What would you do differently?:

I need to learn how to flip turn, but other than that I did as well as I probably could have expected and still came out of the water feeling o.k.
Transition 1
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

I still need to work on getting on the bike and up to speed better. I am always very wobbly with this.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on jumping onto the bike at speed and either getting clipped in or pre-clipping my shoes and strapping into them while riding.
Bike
  • 41m 7s
  • 13 miles
  • 18.97 mile/hr
Comments:

Was on a new bike. Cervelo P3 SL. First race on this after only a few short rides prior to the race. The bike was awesome and I definitely turned in my best ever bike performance. I did pay for it on the run though as my time there was horrible.
What would you do differently?:

I should have pushed less on the hills. I was worried about losing speed so my cadence was too low and I was mashing too big a gear I think. My quads were burning a little, which is something I have never felt before in a sprint. I think it had something to do with pushing too hard on the hills and the different geometry of the bike. Either way, it hurt my run time.
Transition 2
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

I thought this transition went well, but I was dead last in my age group so apparently not.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get out of the shoes while still clipped in. I unclipped and ran in my bike shoes. Then had to take them off and put on running shoes. Had I made this change I would have at least been somewhere up in the pack with this transition.
Run
  • 29m 49s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 58s  min/km
Comments:

The first half mile I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to finish the race without walking. The legs felt like toast. That quickly went away at the half mile point and I knew I would make it, but was going very slow and definitely felt like I better not push it too much harder. By the end, I felt like I may have actually pulled back too much and might have been able to dial it up a little more in the last mile. Probably could have gone 30-45 seconds faster, but would have been hurting more for it.
What would you do differently?:

Save the legs a little more on the bike. Push a little harder in the last 1/3 of the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and got the kids ready for Gracie's race. I felt good.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing.

Event comments:

This was a good race and is indicative of Play-Tri races. They do a good job. I would have rated higher, but the pool for this race is really too small. You have swimmers going up and back in the same lane with virtually no room for passing. The transition area was nice and roomy though. Post race food was just o.k. This had two different divisions of kids tris after the adults. My daughter was in the first division. All of the transitions were in the same area so we had to wait a long time (approximately 45 minutes) to get in and get her gear after her race as the transition was closed due to the last division running. Think it would have been better to have the transitions segregated to avoid this. We had a family gathering to go to after this and it caused us to be late. Despite the above, I would do this race again.
