Pre-race routine:

Same breakfast as always.

In an unusual turn of events, my family came with me to the race to watch/cheer. No one was happy about getting up at 5 AM.
Event warmup:

Minimal. Met up with a friend who was running his first marathon and chatted. We had run quite a bit together in training. Answered some last minute questions and socialized.

First mile of the marathon is the warmup.

See the splits above. Paced this about as well as I can given the training coming in. Took all of January and February off from running to try to get my knee "right" so I did not have the training block that I wanted to over the winter.

I ran with several different groups of people throughout the race. It was nice to have people to talk to while racing. I hope folks don't mind me socializing with them while racing. It sure makes the miles go easier.

I have had a life long goal of running sub 3:00 in a marathon. I am sure that I can do this with another block like the one I just did.
What would you do differently?:

Last four miles the pace fell off just a little bit. I 'thought' that I might be able to finish with 5 x 6:30 miles to nab the sub 3:00 but when I got to those last four miles I was doing everything in my power to hold the pace. With a few more miles in my legs during training I hope I will have the resiliency to hold and even accelerate at the end.

Interestingly, I never really felt winded for this whole race. The effort felt "easy" from a cardio/pulmonary perspective. It was actually very surprising to me. The legs definitely felt the miles toward the end. Again, just another month or two of volume to harden the legs and things will come around nicely.
Post race
Warm down:

Sore. Lots of fluids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Suboptimal training due to injury but I'm not crying about a 3:02 and a PR. Will be going back to Boston in 2016 as well.

Event comments:

Great local race. It sells out every year so I don't need to promote it too much.

If you want a BQ-type course with beautiful scenery, it is hard to go wrong with this race.

Time to get to triathlon training. I'm going to try to maintain the run volume and see what that looks like when it comes to long course racing later this summer.

Course: Out and back along the shore of East Grand Traverse Bay. Maybe not as beautiful as Big Sur but a pretty spectacularly beautiful race.
