Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:50 --The usual - cheerios, blueberries, coffee for breakfast. My 9-year-old son wanted to help out at the race, so that meant we had to be there by 6.
A good crew of MA BTers were helping out Jorge...Max, Denise (DK), Amanda (Akabak),May (TAGP), and Nikki were all there registering folks and body marking. My son, Nick, help Max hand out timing chips. Ran into (Laura)MATriMom on registration line!
I hung around a bit, and then walked to the transition area to set up.

Event warmup:

The 3/4 mile walk from parking lot to transition area. Four other members of my Tri team were there, so we hung around and chatted..
Swim
  • 21m 46s
  • 850 yards
  • 02m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Well, my swimming still sucks. However, I felt comfortable in this swim, got a rhythm going and (almost) enjoyed it. I didn't stray from the course like I usually do.

Transition 1
  • 04m 53s
Comments:

A long jog uphill to the transition area...gravel and bare feet -- yippy! The suit came off pretty well -- not as graceful as some others, though.

Bike
  • 38m 39s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.63 mile/hr
Comments:

With the exception of the U-Turn - I love this bike course. It never gets boring. I went all-out. That's one thing I like about sprint courses is that I can go as hard as I want, since I don't need to reserve energy for a 3-hour race.

Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

The dismount is at the bottom of a slight hill, with the transition area down a steeper hill. After dismounting, I had to shuffle down the hill because I was afraid I'd slip on the asphalt.

Threw on my running shoes, sucked down a Gu, and I was off.

Run
  • 24m 43s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

I didn't feel like I was going particularly fast, but Max said I was. I usually don't run a 8-minute mile pace... Maybe the course was a bit short? Anyway, the run felt great. Passed a few folks near the end.
Post race
Warm down:

a bit of stretching, but not enough.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of swim ability

Event comments:

This was Jorge's second year oranizing this race and I think some things went better this year. However, they ran out of water at the finish and we had to drink Heed, which many people thought was icky. Also, I heard that some runners from the last wave missed the first turn on the running course because a sign blew away...

I had a great time at this race and enjoyed seeing the MABters. My son told me he had such a great time volunteering that he wants to do it for all the races I enter!

Course: 2 loops of slightly rolling hills at a former army base. Little traffic but there was some wicked head winds at some parts. I realize that it's due to the the fact that the location is on a hill and that there are not many trees in some areas, as they were cleared for military exercises. At one point we had to slow way down and make a U-Turn..
