Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4 A.M. as usual to get tot eh race start first. I was there first waiting for the parkranger to open the gate. Ate an english muffin with peanut butter and a protein shake. Packed up the car and headed to Aurora Resevoir. This is day 1 of a 2 day race series. Today is a sprint and tomorrow is an Olympic distance.
Event warmup:

Dynamic warmup with Ryan and Adam. Short run followed with some pick ups.
Talked with the crew and met Josh, Pinata, Zev and talked to Dan and the regulars.

Comments:

Very cold morning with the rain and wind. I stayed in the bathroom with the other 50 or so guys trying to stay warm. Finally went down to the water to get in a short warmup. The water was warmer than the air temp. Got out of the water and got ready to start in my time trial order. We went off 1 at a time. I like that. I run and dove in. Swam hard to the first bouy and turned. Had a guy pass me so I jumped on his feet. then about a minute later a kayaker told us to go around the other bouys on the left. Where did that come from? It was really hard to navigate and I thought I was headed in the right direction. Me and the other guy headed for the other bouy. I must have lost serious time here. Got out at about 8:30 something. The rest of the time was from running up the beach. Thanks to Julia for being a wetsuit stripper. She was fast and efficient. Got to T1.
What would you do differently?:

Navigate better.

Comments:

Great transition. I had one right by the bike entrance and exit. Fastest overall here! Got up to speed with the shoes on the pedals much better today.

Comments:

Good bike. I felt a bit fatigued but kept pushing because I knew I would be off shortly. I kept looking at the odometer thinking the turn was soon because I was at 12 miles. Got to the turn at 7.2 miles so I knew it was long. I think my ride was faster last year but I am ok with the time. Got to T2 ready to haul ass.
What would you do differently?:

Push a bit harder.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

So I had to stop and dismount. I usually do the flying dismount. For some reason I forgot. Jump off and run. THere was a waman ahead of me going slow so I just waited until she moved. I felt my foot had a cut on the bottom so I sat down to check it out. No blood but a big rock had peeled the skin back and it hurt. So I jumped up and put on the shoes and got out of there. Not my fastest t2 but I was still up there.

Comments:

Started out slow and a guy ran next to me and said he knew me. We talked for a quick second and I said good bye. I could here he was trying to keep up so I pushed the pace and dropped him. I then got into a good rhythm. I had a good stride and quick turn over. I wanted to push the pace and negative split. I did that. Got to the turn around at 10:10 and came home in 9:30. I felt real relaxed and smooth.

Post race
Warm down:

Talked with the BT crew and had some lunch and 2 beers. Then had to leave early to get to my sons soccer game. So no real warm down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Doing an Oly the next day. I didn't want to kill myself since tommorrow would be twice as long.

Event comments:

I was third overall and was first in my agegroup. So I was thrilled. A friend of mine beat me for the first time. Not so pleasant. Talking with friends was awesome. Julia was a great volunteer. She did it all. THanks to Ryan for picking up the pocket knife I won. Wow what a great prize. First time ever being in the top 3 overall! The race was cold and disorganized. Nothing was on time and the RD should have told us the bike courrse was long. Congrats to Adam for 1st in age group. Stacie, 3rd in agegroup and the rest of the gang for setting PR's and racing well.
