Pre-race routine:

Before I start the wirte up I would like to note that this was the 3rd triathlon in the world. Only the original hawaii and one other has been running a longer time. This was the 27th year!

Woke up and I already had all of my stuff together, so I pretty much ate a clif bar and a few slices of plain white bread, checked out our bikes and pumped up the tires. I also played with disco a bit and then we took off. I'm always a time freak so I wanted to get there early and we got there with plenty of time to set everything up.

This was the first race that I've been too (well I've only been to 3) where they had assigned places for your bikes. It was also my first crack at this distance. I set up my area, and got everything the way I wanted and then headed off to body marking. I tried to get a lady with nice handwriting becuase it always seems like I get someone like myself who writes as well as a child. Maybe it's just mental but I wanted to my number to look right.

Anyways I got that done and had a bunch of time to wait around to get started.
Event warmup:

About 15 minutes before the start I got down to the beach and did about a 7 - 8 min warmup in in the water. Everything felt pretty good, little did I know that I would have a really bad swim :)

Comments:

Swim was bad! I think that I swam an extra 200 - 300m. I was all over the place. I would sight after a while and notice that there was a big group of people about 50m to my right and I would have to crawl back. I was expecting to finish this portion in about 27 - 28 min.

I went out pretty well and due to my wonderful sighting skills I ended up swimming by myself. Really I just wanted to get through the swim and not be too tired so I accomplished my goal and had a pretty good time.
What would you do differently?:

learn how to sight and push a little harder.

Comments:

This went really smooth. Typically I'm pretty dizzy when I come out of open water and this day was no exception. I was prety dizzy, but it went away by the time I got on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing

Comments:

This time includes my trasistions, so my average on the bike was closer to 31 KPH which I'm really happy with. I went out at a comfortable pace and just tried to keep my heartrate at a reasonable level so that I wouldn't over do it.

I passed a lot of people on the bike and felt pretty fast which was a big boost. I think I started the bike in 121 place and ended in 83 place which means that I passed at least 38 people on the bike!

Right at about the 5k mark I got passed by a woman with some hot wheels. So I figured she would be my rabbit and I would try to keep pace with her. Well I ended up dropping her on the first big hill, and didn't see hot wheels till quite a bit later on. I felt really strong on the hills and in reflection wish that I had pushed them a bit harder. Pretty close to the turn around I saw my friend John and we traded places a few times. I would pass him on the hills and then we would come back and pass me on the down hills and flats. Right after the turn around I passed him and said see you on the downhill but I didn't actually end up seeing him again. I did however see hot wheels again. She ended up passing my on a long downhill section and took off like a rocket. I figured I would let her have a bit of space and reel her back in towards the end.

Well the end got closer and although I did get within about 300m of her she beat me. Thats ok though because she helped me keep up my motivation on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder. I feel like I could have put more into the bike. Catch hot wheels
Transition 2

Comments:

Wow... fastest transition ever! I had both of my feet out of the petals and swung my leg over to one side and ran off the bike running. This transition was seriously less then 15 seconds.

Comments:

I was off running pretty good out of trasition but for some reason really couldn't push hte pace. Usually during bricks my legs feel weird but I have no troble keeping pace. Today I just felt slow for about the first 3k and was getting passed by quite a few people.

At around the 3k mark I looked at my watch and my heart rate and knew that I could go harder and started to really push it. Well when I did that it felt like my legs had a second wind and I was really flying. I ended up passing people that flew by my at the beginning, and really felt my like I got in my groove. The last 1/2 of that 10k was awesome. I felt really good and wish that I would have pushed my self to get the pace up a little earlier. I maybe could have knocked a minute off the 10k time, but really it doesn't matter becuase I felt like I was on top of the world!
What would you do differently?:

Push the pace a little earlier
Post race
Warm down:

I jsut waited by the finish line to see Kristi cross

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing, this was probably the best that I was going to do on this day. Maybe I could have knocked a few minutes off if I swam straighter and pushed a little harder, but I have no regrets.

Event comments:

This race was a ton of fun!
