Pre-race routine:

Up at 3 am and had a UCAN bar and half a banana. Then drank one serving of UCAN about 90 minutes before race start.
Event warmup:

Short run and strides.
Swim
  • 08m 26s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started off 3rd in the lane and then caught second at 100 yards. First 100 yards at 1:30. Shoulders started aching around 300 but finished it all freestyle. Popped out at 8:26
What would you do differently?:

8 seconds faster than last year
Transition 1
  • 00m 22s
Comments:

Good T1 and did the flying mount well. No shoe issues.
What would you do differently?:

1 second faster than last year.
Bike
  • 34m 15s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 21.90 mile/hr
Comments:

Had one guy go by me in my AG right away and so I just paced off him the rest of the race. Felt strong throughout. Good headwind going south and uphill . Garmin had me at 22.3 mph over 12.5 miles at 33:46. New aero helmet was great and the bike felt fast!
What would you do differently?:

Definitely improving year by year here.
Transition 2
  • 00m 31s
Comments:

Little slow here with the aero helmet and the dismount line had moved from last year.
What would you do differently?:

Prep this area better before the race.
Run
  • 18m 34s
  • 3.05 miles
  • 06m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

Started off about ten seconds behind the AG guy and he looked strong but I was able to pass him at about 0.5 miles in. First mile felt great and easy and I hit it at about 6:00. Felt strong all the way until about 2.5 miles but never slowed down. Stomach was great and no cramping. Finished strong. Minute faster than last year!
What would you do differently?:

EN run training is the bomb!
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged a bit to see Erica finish and then rode another hour later in the day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Keep surprising myself here. Not sure what the ceiling is for this race but I feel like I can still take time off all three. Would be awesome to go under 1:02!

Event comments:

I don't know what the fate is of this race, which has always been a favorite of mine. There were scarce volunteers on the bike course. The numbers have gone done from 350 to not even 150 this year. I really think dropping their USAT certification has had unintended consequences.
