Total Time = 1h 27m 12s
Overall Rank = 22/139
Age Group = M30-39
Age Group Rank = 10/63
Pre-race routine:

This was my first triathlon. I woke up my normal weekend time at 5am and ate PB&J sandwich and some yogurt, then flushed it down with some liquids. I got to the race at 7:30am and went through the body marking line and up to the transition area in plenty of time. This was a wave start, so I would start the race at 9:04am.
Event warmup:

Not much of a warm-up, some stretching and a couple of short sprints to get the blood moving. I had a powerade gel about 30m before the start of my swim.
Swim
  • 16m 51s
  • 800 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Fairly pleased with swim time given the course set up. My heart rate felt higher than it actually was and I couldn't get it back down until 3-4 miles in the bike leg.
What would you do differently?:

nothing but log more time in the water.
Transition 1
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

This needs to be faster considering some of the other transition times I've seen for this race.
Bike
  • 38m 32s
  • 13.4 miles
  • 20.87 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

get more hill workouts in.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Again, I need to be faster in the transition area. No problems with equipment.
Run
  • 29m 8s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

This is where it went downhill. I was a little winded on the run and the course was very hilly with a doozy on mile 3. I started off OK with the first mile clocking in at a 8.15 mile. But I guess I bonked given my ending time. I think the course was actually longer than a 5K. But I still didn't have the energy I thought I should have for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe take some type of gel or other fuel before the run. Train more.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and drank fluids as it was pretty warm by the finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

more training

Event comments:

Since this is my first race, I don't have anything to compare it to. My only suggestion would be to have better post race food for the competitors. The last thing I really want to eat when I'm finished racing is chips and queso. I thought this first year race went very smoothly and it was well run. I plan on doing it again next year.

Course: The course was changed and ended up being a 2 loop course around the Northridge rec center. During a training ride the week before, we calculated the distance as 13.4m and not 12m as advertised. My breathing started off pretty heavy from the swim, and it didn't help that the first half of the loop is uphill. But overall, I thought the ride portion went fine. I had enough fluids and I passed several people.
