Swim
Comments: Much better swim than Kinetic. The first half still seemed difficult to keep heart rate down. I did get some good drafting and colliding after the turn. What would you do differently?: Keep working on open water swim comfort. Transition 1
Comments: I've really been working on faster transitions, as this seems like free speed. I am happy with these transitions. Bike
Comments: I tried to push the bike a bit. I'm consistently 19-21 mph. Consistency is good, but I want to figure out how to get a bit faster. The roads weren't great. There was gravel across the road in several spots that could easily have been swept or removed. What would you do differently?: Keep trying to get faster. Transition 2
Comments: This was my first attempt at an Oly distance without socks. I wanted to see if I could do transition faster and how my feet would handle it. I started getting some blisters in the last mile, but it did improve T2 time. What would you do differently?: I may use powder or lube in shoes and try sockless again. Run
Comments: I might have been able to push this just a little bit more, but I'm pretty happy with it. What would you do differently?: Push a bit more. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Bike performance needs to improve to improve overall race performance. I'm happy with my running, but I need to improve biking. Event comments: This is the smallest race I've ever done. The upside of this is the age group win (never thought I'd type those words). The downside is that the course was very desolate at times. I passed many people on the bike (mostly duathletes) and run. I was only passed by one person on the bike. The post-race situation was lacking. Awards took forever because there were so many races: paratriathlon, aquabike, duathlon, sprint, olympic. A cup that says "Award" is really what you get for an AG win? That's pathetic. The beer was rationed in tiny Dixie cups. There wasn't enough food for all of the racers and spectators to wait so long after the race. The volunteers were late and unprepared. For example, they barely made it out on the water prior to the swim start. They didn't do a great job of directing on the course. The course could have been cleared of gravel. I understand this is a small race and RMS doesn't want to spend tons of money on it. On the other hand, it's not going to last if they don't do something to improve the race experience. Woke up at 4:30 and drove an hour with family to race site. Set up transition and hung out in car for a bit. Didn't need to be at race site so early as the race is very small.
Walked 1/4 mile to swim start and swam a bit to get a feel for the water and any potential current.
