Pre-race routine:

I got up around 4:00 and it was raining pretty hard. I had a bowl of cereal, OJ, and coffee and checked the weather reports. The day was going to be cold, wet, and windy. I hadn't been to this race before and i checked Google Earth to see what the parking situation would be like. If the parking was on grass, i was going to bag the race, but there was plenty of parking so I went for it. I had mostly packed up the night before so it didn't take long to get packed up. I read for a while, did some light stretching, and left for the race site around 6:00.
Event warmup:

Not much of anything. There was no time for a warm up swim.
Swim
  • 08m 17s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Since this was a sprint, I went out harder than I typically do and I got pretty out of breath, but I did get ahead of the pack. By the time I got to the half way point, there were several swimmers from the previous wave that made navigation difficult. After rounding the boat, I slowed down a bit, but was still pretty out of breath. According to the official time, my pace was 2:04/100. My Garmin had me at 1:30/100.
What would you do differently?:

I would probably take it a bit easier at the start and work up to a reasonable pace. I think I wasted some effort with this swim that slowed me a bit for the bike.
Transition 1
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

I was a bit slow in T1. The rain did not help. I do like the fact that my new wetsuit is easier to get on and off.
What would you do differently?:

I need to practice my transitions. I have not done that yet this year.

Comments:

I stayed pretty much in upper zone 4 through most of this ride, also hitting zone 5 at the start. The cross-wind was not fun. A couple times I nearly lost it and had to use a death grip on my aerobars. With the wet pavement, corners had to be taken slowly. Being in the 3rd from the last wave, there were no fast riders behind me and I aw not passed the entire race. Since it was cool and wet and the race was short, I didn't bother to drink anything.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I was not that happy with my pace, but it was OK for the conditions.
Transition 2

Comments:

T2 was OK.

Comments:

This was a pretty good run. I maintained a decent pace and felt good. I like
What would you do differently?:

I did just about what I wanted to do.

Warm down:

Nothing

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was a good race.

Event comments:

I had a pretty good race. Hopefully they will have the buoys figured out for next year for the swim.

Performance: Good
Suit: Full
Course: The course was supposed to be straight out, round a boat at the end of a string of buoys, and then straight back in. Unfortunately, the boat was not adequately anchored and it drifted dramatically. I felt bad for the early waves, as the string of buoys kept moving and they had no chance to react properly. To top things off, a second boat tossed a line to the buoy boat and started pulling it back into position. This meant that the swimmers now had to swim towards a buoy that was moving away! it was nuts. By the time my wave started, the boat was more or less back in position, but from my Garmin data, it was clear that it was still a moving target.
