Pat Griskus Triathlon Series
75F / 24C
Overcast
Total Time = 4h 08m
Overall Rank = 194/195
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 29/30
Pre-race routine:

Get up at 4:30 (went to bed at midnight.. Only about 3 hours sleep.
Eat a banana, bagel, coffee.
Event warmup:

Stretching, a little swim to hop in the water and get wet.
Swim
  • 51m
  • 1760 yards
  • 02m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Never swam a mile before. Took it very slow and paced myself. Finished well.. pace was what I expected for my current fitness.
My calves started cramping 1/2 way. Switching from left to right.. had to modify kick or kick very little.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more often. Swim longer distances. I am only swimming 2 times a week. Need to up this to 3 minimum, 4 times a week would be better.
Transition 1
  • 03m 35s
Comments:

Transition 1 was a bit away from swim. Part of transition time is actually running to the transition area. All good. Only 4th time using wet suit. Need to figure this out.
What would you do differently?:

More swimming practice.
Bike
  • 1h 47m 8s
  • 25 miles
  • 14.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Need a better bike.. There is only so much to do with fitness.. I am OK on the bike, not enough low gears for the amount of hills. Needed to stand and pedal, mashing big time..

Right foot "fell asleep" or was too cold?? Never felt this before.
Calves cramping from swim stayed with me on the bike.

Overall I was faster than expected.
What would you do differently?:

Train on more hills...
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Overall OK.. took time to drink some water left in bottle. Didn't drink enough on the bike rids.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, T2 was good..
Run
  • 1h 24m 35s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 13m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Slow.. I was burnt from the bike.

Legs were dead tired...
Right arm started to cramp a little over 1/2 way through. Could not bring water to mouth. Kept shaking it off.. never felt this bad (aches) before...
What would you do differently?:

More training, better eating.

Planning calories better.
Post race
Warm down:

Went to pavilion and ate a cheeseburger.
Then a banana
Drank gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of sleep.
Not planning nutrition properly.
Training - need to push myself more.

Event comments:

Very well run race. I had never done an Olympic distance before. Have not run here before.

Not knowing what to expect, I asked a lot of questions. Everyone very helpful and friendly...
