Swim
Comments: The course was difficult to navigate with so many turn buoys out there and the river current. I kept looking to make sure I was on the right course, as I didn't want to swim extra distance. The section back towards transition was tough, as the current had picked up. What would you do differently?: I'm a good swimmer. I need more confidence so that I keep swimming and don't stop to look so often. Lakes and places that are easier to site and have less current could provide this. Transition 1
Comments: There is a long run with your bike from T1 to the bike start or mount line through mud and gravel. Otherwise, T1 went pretty well. I did run around my rack once. What would you do differently?: Figure out the best direction to rack my bike. Otherwise, these are getting better as I feel less winded after the swim. Bike
Comments: Again, I felt like I pushed the bike pretty hard (too hard?). The 21.1 mph is my fastest in a tri. The flatness of the course permitted that. This was, however , the worst discipline for me with respect to my age group. What would you do differently?: Perhaps a new bike fit will help. Transition 2
Comments: A long run back into T2 through the mud and gravel. Otherwise, my transitions are definitely improving. Run
Comments: I am disappointed in the run. The last two miles were sloppy and required some walking. A couple of other competitors tried to encourage me, which was great. I had no idea I was going to struggle at the end. This is becoming an alarming trend. Did I push too hard on the bike? I think it's a mental thing I have to fix. What would you do differently?: Figure out the mental aspect of finishing a triathlon strong. That's my second slowest triathlon 10K. Post race
Warm down: Grabbed some drinks and found the other runners who were encouraging me. Then, had some pizza and beer before heading to the beach with the girls. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mental aspects of the swim and especially the run. This sport is much more mental than physical. Event comments: The swim course could be improved to improve site lines and deal with the current. The river is so wide at this point that more siting buoys are needed. Woke up at 3:45 to dress and eat sausage egg muffins before 1:15 drive to race site. Set up transition and further prepared. Kristen didn't feel well, so I tried to talk to her before the race.
Very short (several minute) swim in river to get a feel for the water and current.
