Pre-race routine:

This is the 2nd of the time trials for me this summer, the first being about 7 weeks ago. I've been training but haven't had great consistency due to some work travel and vacation time away from my bike.

I went into the race just trying to race better than last time, where I was totally cooked the last 5 miles.

Got up at 5:30, ate a little bit and then drove down to Cambridge. Traffic was horrible and it took me about 20 minutes longer than I expected, which made me rush a bit through registration and getting ready for the WU ride.

Wind was howling out of the SSW...maybe 15 mph with some gusts. This should be fun.
Event warmup:

6-ish mile ride from the registration area to the race start. This is a pretty cool way of doing things. Wind seems to be diminishing a bit. I took it a little easier on the WU than last time.

Comments:

Took off and as expected the first 6-7 miles were into a tough headwind through the marshes. I rode in aero into the headwinds and moved to the drops when we got a break from the wind. Doing OK, getting passed a lot by guys that went after me. Averaging about 20 mph so far.

Come to the first 90 degree turn and as I tried to execute the turn it felt like my headset froze up on me, and I had to REALLY struggle to make the turn. This slowed me down to a stop almost and I debated DNFing right there. I kept going a little slower than I would have and the bike seemed to be working again. Obviously this didn't help, as my HR jumped and I lost concentration for a few minutes. The next turn was a couple of miles later and I slowed WAY down to be safe; didn't seem to have any trouble but I was extremely conservative in the turns the rest of the way.

Once I made the turn around mile 9 I have a bit of a tailwind but the wind definitely slowed down from earlier (figures, right???). Without the strong tailwind of seven weeks ago I couldn't fly during this section only averaging just over 22 mph. Hit the halfway point about 37 flat, but I knew I could make up some time.

Q3 was tailwind and I felt strong, even holding 25ish for a couple of miles.

The last 6 miles were hard, but that's to be expected. I paced much better and while I was suffering for sure it wasn't the death march like last time. The final 2-3 miles turns you back into the wind, which kinda sucks but it wasn't that strong by this point. Picked it up a little the last 1K and had a little tiny bit left for a sprint the final 500.
What would you do differently?:

Not almost have a single-bike crash in front of the official and a police officer. :-/
Post race
Warm down:

Rode the six miles back to the car...felt a TON better than last time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training, about 10 pounds of extra weight I'm carrying, and I probably had the worst equipment out there.

Event comments:

Good race, well organized. I mean, it's a TT in the middle of nowhere so what can you expect.
