Total Time = 2h 45m 49s
Overall Rank = 72/463
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 13/65
Pre-race routine:

Stayed at hotel in Luray. Ate Hardee's biscuit for breakfast. Short drive to race site. Set up transition.
Event warmup:

Short swim. There really wasn't adequate swim warm-up time, but I got in a hundred or so meters.
Swim
  • 32m 52s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 11s / 100 meters
Comments:

The lake is really too small for a triathlon of this size. The Olympic swim course really takes the ENTIRE lake to get the distance in. This was the most crowded swim I have done. The first stretch was crowded by my rather large wave. Once we got past the first turn buoy, we started catching the wave ahead, so it never got less crowded. I did catch a draft on the back stretch of the V-section. I also swam an extra 150 or so meters, although I seemed to swim straight. I stepped on a rock while existing on hurt my foot.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure what I could have done differently. I believe this is the nature of the course at this swim. I believe it might have been a bit long.
Transition 1
  • 03m 13s
Comments:

I am still fighting with the visor on my Rudy Project helmet. This seems to be a design flaw. It comes out at the slightest touch, making for extra long T1 times. There was also quite a crowd at the mount line on a narrow section of road in the park.
What would you do differently?:

Either figure out the helmet or scrap the visor completely.
Bike
  • 1h 19m 57s
  • 41 kms
  • 30.77 km/hr
Comments:

This was my first race with my new Powertap and HED wheels. I think it made a difference, although it's hard to tell on this course. This course was definitely challenging. I had some downhills at 45.9 and over 38 mph. I didn't push as hard as I did at CB.
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to descend better so that I don't have to use the breaks on the way down.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Took a minute to get socks on.
What would you do differently?:

Get socks on faster.
Run
  • 48m 21s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 50s  min/km
Comments:

I was worried after I had to walk during my CB run. I ran this entire course. I felt good on the outs (they were downhill) and not as good on the backs (they were uphill). This is too slow for me. The course was tough, but I am faster than this. I need to push more.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on speed and push the pace more.
Post race
Warm down:

Got post-race food and hung with the family for a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The only real issues I had with this race were in T1 and my descending on the bike. I love the new wheels. I also need to push the run more. IM training may be causing slower running.

Event comments:

This was my first race put on by Racine Multisports. They did a pretty good job. The venue is beautiful and the course is challenging, in the mountains. The volunteers were very enthusiastic and fantastic. The lake is too small for the swim and thus overly crowded. They also had timing issues, which is frustrating. It took several days to get accurate splits. Overall, this is a good race. I would do another Racine race.
