Pre-race routine:

I did the swim and run of this relay. My friend Susan did the bike.
Got my gear and the kids in the car really early. Thought the kids would keep sleeping. haha.
Met up with Susan and planned our strategy after getting our chips. Breakfast was toast, tea, and hard boiled egg on the way.
Event warmup:

I got in the pool and did a few laps, practiced turning under the lane lines, and practiced the jump in - start. I also timed myself doing a 50 to make sure I hadn't gotten my seed time all wrong. (I didn't.)
Swim
  • 09m 15s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

So... It's not a long swim. I knew I could do it, but haven't been able to train. That's OK, I was prepared to have tired arms. I was a little worried about seeding, and talked with the women around me to see if I thought I should move. (I put 7:59 for my time and was seeded 81. I was afraid that was overly optimistic.) I didn't move, and in the end I passed two and got passed twice. So I think that's about as good as it can get. I did get really tired, fought to keep good form, and had a little trouble getting out of the pool because my arms were so jelly-tired. Knowing I only had to tag my teammate, I ran hard. The time includes getting in and out of the pool, and I'm not sure if it includes running the length of the transition area this time or not. I can't remember if there was another timing mat... Anyway, it was fine. Time trials in pools is always kind of annoying, but it could have been worse.
What would you do differently?:

Train, haha! (Have a new baby. Hard to get time alone to train!)
Oh, and start my stopwatch. I forgot. I really wish I knew my in pool time. Oh well.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

high five at the rack and my biker was off! (We had separate timing chips for each team member.) Most of this time was me running from swim in to our rack. We were close to bike out.
What would you do differently?:

Actually gotten my stopwatch to start. I didn't get it to start for the swim either. Fail.

Susan did awesome. :)
Transition 2
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

Waiting around at the rack for your teammate to come back isn't real fun. But it IS nice to have plenty of time to get ready to run. I had a fruit pouch and water while waiting. Fiddled with my shoes.

Again, high five at the rack, and I was off.

Run
  • 39m 33s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 12m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Well... the original plan was for someone else to do the run, but she backed out 10 days prior. So I did it. I have not been training regularly since... well... I guess you could say May, but even then was pretty minimal. So I was prepared for it to be rough. But it was still fun. I though that since I didn't bike, that would make it easier. No jelly legs! But I did feel some fatigue. A nice, varied course, but lots of rolling up and down. At the first aid station was a guy who had shorts around his ankles, no shirt, and a sign over his middle reading "If you stop, this sign will drop." I nearly spit out my gatorade! I ran almost the whole thing. I did walk a bit up the last big hill. Ran in to the finish where my 6 yo and teammate met me. 6 yo, instead of running with us to the finish line, just smoked us.
What would you do differently?:

Again, train! And specifically, train hills.
Post race
Warm down:

Pizza, oreos, water, good times with friends and family. Sat on the wet wet grass. Nursed the baby. Went home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not training! Extra weight!

Event comments:

Great fun race, friendly racers and volunteers. A good choice for your first. A bit hilly. Bouncy house for the kids and some vendors and music.
