Swim
Comments: Lots of beginners, me included, which made for a hectic start. I had hoped to pass people but the first turn was about 75m and became a traffic jam. One swimmer actually began to swim diagonally across our path. He obviously swam off course then over corrected. Now I know why beginners start with pool swims. Still, it did not feel difficult, sighting was good, did some breast stroke as we got tied up at each turn but would not have otherwise. What would you do differently?: I would get to the front of the swim and start faster. I just didn't know what would be best but in running and cycling events I've found it better to start in the front. Transition 1
Comments: Faster then I expected, but I did not start my watch lap2 until I reached the transition. So the swim was slightly faster and T2 slower. What would you do differently?: It's been about 10 yrs since my last duathlon so I was glad I did not fumble my helmet or sunglasses. Bike
What would you do differently?: Not much, for the shape I was in it was a good ride. Transition 2
Comments: I have to take orthotics out of my bike shoes and put them in the running shoes. Considering that added time and having regular laces I was surprised at how fast T2 was. It felt much longer, as if the race was going on around me while I sat there in a time warp.Of course, there were no timing pads. This was taken off my watch. Glad my wife was standing at the rack otherwise I would have had to hunt for the spot. There were water cups on the way out, I would have grabbed two if I had known there would be no other water. What would you do differently?: Buy new laces or lace system.Perhaps get orthotics for the bike shoes that I could leave in them. Run
Comments: Slower then I expected but today was more of a test to see if my knee could handle the event then trying to race it. Only one person passed me which made me feel good. Was able to thank volunteers along the course so I could at least still talk. What would you do differently?: Unfortunately, I need to run hills more, UGHHHHH! I don't mind riding them but dislike running them. Post race
Warm down: Walked and drank water. Stretch of calves, quads, IT band and hamstring. After lunch I got a massage from my wife, what a great gal! Of course, now I owe her. What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall my time was better then I expected. The swim was slower but I got behind too many people. The bike was faster then expected considering the hills, I think I could have avg 20mph on a flat course. The run was slower then I expected but it wasn't flat and the heat by 10:30 was increasing quickly. I tried to pace myself which I feel I did, could have perhaps pushed the end of the run. That's why I would have benefitted from mile markers. I had hoped for between 1:20 and 1:23 total time, seeing 1:18 I thought I had erred with my watch but I hadn't. Event comments: Hard to judge the race since it was my first tri but not my first competition. A little unorganized initially but great traffic control through most intersections. The police stopped every car if a cyclist was approaching. The director wants us to email him suggestions and they will include: water stations in the run mile markers on the run time the event better system with the running shoes (two pair did not get to T2 until several minutes after the competitors). I don't think anyone was writing our numbers down as we crossed but my wife thinks I came in 20th. That's also competing against relay teams so I don't really know how I did. The race was close and did not start until 9AM (actual start a little later). I basically did my normal Saturday AM thing: up 5AM (yes I do get up at 5 on Saturday much to the dismay of my wife); couple cups of tea; protein shake; out with the dogs and wife 6:30; I decided to have a small bowl of left over pasta. Multiple trips to the bathroom. Imust have been dehydrated before the race! because of all the peeing at home and then again at the race. And lets not forget number 2, twice. That's actually not bad and I did not have to go at the race (must be a first). I was surprisingly calm.
Swam and practiced a few drills, felt good but the first buouy looked far once I got in the water.
