Swim
Comments: I started on the outside and waited 5-10 seconds after start to start myself out of the crowd. I know I am not a fast swimmer. So it is easier to avoid. And this race allowed that to happen very easily. I ended up having my best OW swim in a sprint race. It was hard and I still couldn't settle down with pace or heart rate. Goggles flooded about 200 m into swim. I fought with them and stopped about 10 times. Finally got the right one to seal and swam the last 300-350 m with the left eye full of water What would you do differently?: Still need to find a way to settle down and breath and get 4 strokes per breath like I can in the pool. I was only able to do this about 10-15% of the time . Transition 1
Comments: Pretty decent transition really. considering I opted to put my socks on and put a shirt on in transition. It was cool out so I wanted a dry shirt for the ride and socks. I kind of took my time walking out of the swim instead of running. What would you do differently?: Could have put a bit more effort into getting out of the swim and running to bike. But opted to walk and hoped it would lower heart rate. Wetsuit is a bit big on bottom retains water and hard to get off heels. Should modify my wetsuit really but not too concerned about saving 3-5 seconds. Bike
Comments: Decent ride. I have little hill training so to come out and start on a small hill climb sucked. But I did ok. I backed off and let my heart rate come down and settled into a decent pace. Goal in mind I still had to run. I drank my whole bottle of fluids on bike which was great for me. I wanted it all in me before the run. What would you do differently?: I probably could have pushed a bit harder. After the 5km mark I settled into a comfortable pace and my heart rate was down to 145. I know I can race at 150-151 bpm and still be ok at the end. Transition 2
Comments: great transition wouldn't do a thing different Run
Comments: started out too fast. Hip flexors were already tight from riding the hills. Then got about 2km out and stepped on a large rock with left foot. Foot started to cramp and I walked for 5-10 seconds. Slowed my pace down and stopped having a running goal other then to finish and see my daughter. What would you do differently?: I need more running base. I have only been doing 3-4 km runs trying to keep my knee in ok shape to run for this race. It really showed. I should be capable of a 30 min or less 5km. But You know for this race. I would not have done anything different. I knew I wasn't going to have a fast run. But if I had a pain free run it was a great run. Post race
Warm down: Ran across the line shook the hand of the MSC gentleman at the finish line that was there to shake everyone's hand. Then went and picked up my 2 year old daughter. Hugged the heck out of her and my fiancé for cheering me on and cried a little. Then went and met up with a few friends that raced and had some chocolate milk. Avoided the food line because it was long and the 2 year old was cranky. Went back to our truck where we had food and had a bit of a picnic in the grass for 15-20 mins. My better half packed up my bike and gear for me and we drove home with a passed out 2 year old and nearly passed out me. What limited your ability to perform faster: Need more training and running base. Event comments: Excellent race Multisport Canada does an amazing job. Thanks to all the volunteers and to John Salt for such a great event. Including options when signing up . Tshirt, Hat or discount for not wanting either. Tons of aid stations for a small course with options. Best event I have attended in Ontario. Will definitely make it to another one of their events. Maybe welland half if I can get myself back in order or gravenhurst sprint next year. Last updated: 2015-09-14 12:00 AM
