Pre-race routine:

I woke up 3.30 AM and had oatmeal and coffee. Then drove to a downtown parking lot and then catch a shuttle form the host hotel to the transition. At the transition, set my space and filled out the bottles ate a waffle. I wa sone of the few lucky folks who had just 4 bikes on my rack so we had plenty of space to spread out for transition. Once I was set up, caught the shuttle to swim start and hung out there for a bit. at about 6.45 AM, walked to the post-race bag drop-off and then walked back to the swim start for the pre-race festivities
Event warmup:

There was not really opportunity to siwm in the watre on race day so I got in the water early to get a feel foe the temperarture. This always helps me. Swam for a couple of minutes and then back to the floating dock for the start call for my wave.
Swim
  • 33m 48s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

Overall considering how slow a swimmer I am, this was a good swim.
What would you do differently?:

I need to practice quicker strokes for current aided swims.
Transition 1
  • 05m 18s
Comments:

The race had wetsuite striipers which was great. I did have trouble unzipping the westsuit so I need to practice a bit more prior to the race. I pulled my hamstring while getting up after the westuit was removed, leading a really bad cramp and pulled hamstring which presisted throughout the race and got worse.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice more bricks from swim to bike with wetsuit.
Bike
  • 3h 29m
  • 56 miles
  • 16.08 mile/hr
Comments:

This is the segment that the hamstring and carmps in the left leg started acting up.
What would you do differently?:

Ride and course prior to the race to get a feel for the hills, specially with headwind.
Transition 2
  • 05m 50s
Comments:

All in all it went as expcted.
Run
  • 2h 50m 59s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

The cramping was bad by this time and all I could do is run from mile to mile with walks at aid stations. At certain points, my legs were not co-operating and had to walk. This would be, by far, the worst run have ever had. It was mentally discouraging. It seemd to get a little better after mile 6-7 but at this point, I just wanted to finish.
What would you do differently?:

More bike-run bricks
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching and meeting family and friends and had a bite to eat. Then it was off to pick up the bike via a shuttle and a loon walk back with the bike to the car parking. Probably walked about 2 miles after the bike pick-up to the car, which was not run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More time on the saddle and more bricks.

Event comments:

This was only second 70.3 so I don't have much to compare it to. I loved the swim portion, which is clearly reflected in my unrealistic times. The bike course is a bit hilly but scenic. If you're in the earlier waves and not a fast rider, it does get a bit crowded and hairy as the other waves start catching up. The run course is flat and spectator friendly. I would defintely do it again.
