Pre-race routine:

Same as always, subway in the am with vitamins.
Event warmup:

short swim to get used to water temp.
Swim
  • 40m 1s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

Watch out for the shallow water about 100m into the swim, funny to watch from 2nd wave as first wave hit it, not so funny to go across it as it is all rocks.
What would you do differently?:

I need to buy a sleeveless wetsuit for races like today when the water is just cold enough to want to wear a wetsuit. I hadn't swam other than races in 3 months, so I wasn't expecting much.
Transition 1
  • 04m 20s
Comments:

Bike mount is uphill, so a little tough after a long swim. It rained the night and morning before race so ground was soaked and I had shoes on the peddles so socks were soaked before starting the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I took my time knowing I wasn't going to be in any type of contention for a decent finish after a horrendous swim time.
Bike
  • 1h 33m 3s
  • 42 kms
  • 27.08 km/hr
Comments:

Haven't been able to adjust from flat conditions in Coastal Carolina to VA. I didn't put in a ton of mileage leading up to the race but I rode nearly 200 miles in the 30 days leading up to the race and still couldn't come close to replicating similar distances in NC.
What would you do differently?:

I honestly don't know, I put in some time training and trained on some severe hills and rolling incline/declines. 16mph avg for that short of a course is pretty sad.
Transition 2
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Bike dismount is down severe hill, should have gotten out of shoes before start of decent, tough to do coasting downhill.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Again, knowing that my time was terrible, I took my time in T2.
Run
  • 54m 20s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 26s  min/km
Comments:

Good course, uphill to start each lap.
What would you do differently?:

More brick training, took longer than usual to get my legs under me, which cost me some valuable time in what is normally my best leg of a race. Focused too much on just bike training.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing. I was exhausted and sore.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of swim training led to fatigue in every other part of the race. I just wasn't feeling the race from start to finish, very little inner drive once I got deeply behind from the swim.

Event comments:

I thought the race was very well done. This was my first race with this series and it didn't disappoint. Course was great, only complaint would be the rough conditions of the majority of the bike course, but that is very minor. Volunteers were awesome. If I was staying in this area for more than a few months this would be a race that I would come back to year after year.
