Pre-race routine:

this was done on a whim, so I sort of needed to drive fast over to the race venue and sign up; mist turned into drizzle-but it was in the 40's at least-colder when the wind picked up
Event warmup:

about 2 miles-done with multiple strides; legs and back felt a bit tight

Comments:

Started the race at 10K RP and slowly pushed it as we went up the hill into 5K RP. I was running next to a guy who was working hard and it made me want to work harder. It looked like he was in my AG too, so I kind of stalked him. He drifted up and away from me but it was too early for me to push to catch anyone. I held steady pace and tried to pick it up and turn the screws-a feeling I haven't had in a long while. And I remembered that 5K's hurt, when run well. Steadily pushed the last mile and I saw the guy I thought was in my AG. I steadily reeled him in and checked the Garmin. we were at 2.75 miles, so I decided to make a strong pass for an entire minute and see if I could gain separation. I passed him and we complimented each other but I knew he'd follow me. He stayed right behind me and I needed to sprint to hold him off. Immediately after finishing, he came right up and asked how old I was. Too funny. We are all so competitive.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

Post race
Warm down:

Jogged, slowly, back to the 2 mile mark and cheered the finishers, then slogged it back to the car. Shocked to see I got an AG award. I didn't know that the next guy in front of me was in my AG. I thought about kicking hard to see if I could catch him, but he looked younger from 100yds behind so I didn't try. There will be other races...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Haven't done any real speed training.

Event comments:

Very solid local 5K. Good cause and easy access with excellent support. How can you not love a race that promotes 'physical fitness and fun'? Tons of younger kids and it's great to see them all out, especially as the weather was cold and drizzling this year.

Lots of people this year after it wasn't run last year.
