Longboat Key Triathlon Race Series

Overcast
Total Time = 2h 26m 3s
Overall Rank = 119/160
Age Group = 39 & U Clydes
Age Group Rank = 1/4
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5, breakfast (1% milk & toast with crunchy peanut butter), and out the door by 5:20. Arrived at site, porti-pottie, packet pick-up, set up transition, talk with a few friends/teammates, porti-pottie line (again), walk to swim start, realize they moved swim start, walk back to new swim start/finish, talk some more with teammates, do a few arm circles, make my way to the water's edge, wait for countdown to start.
Event warmup:

See above.
Swim
  • 23m 34s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had the course measured at .65 of a mile. I remember looking at my Garmin when I finished the first lap, just over 11 minutes, that would put me at over 3 minutes slower than my average for 400 yards.
What would you do differently?:

GET NEW GOGGLES!!! The TYR goggles that I've been really happy with broke as I was putting them on at the start line. That sucked. I have a spare pair in my tri bag but they were all thee way back at transition and I was less than 1 min to race start. I did manage to get them back together and thy only came apart once during the 2nd loop.
Transition 1
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

Normal T1 for me, nothing to really tweak here.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 03m 5s
  • 20 miles
  • 19.02 mile/hr
Comments:

Tough ride for me. Started out conservative because of the cross/head wind. Didn't want to burn myself up in the first few miles.Tried a few times to get into a smaller gear and every time I would begin to drop my cadence. Spent the first half of the race a 17-18 mph. Kept hoping the turn would bring faster speed, and was wrong!!! Made the turn and hey, there's the wind again! What I was hoping was a head/cross wing was basically a straight cross wind. No relief, no benefit.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I had to either back down on the bike so I could have some legs left for the run, or crush the bike and die on the run. I chose option 1.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

2nd fastest T2 in both Clydesdale divisions and that included time to put on socks. I'll take that and be happy. Remembered to untie shoes this time and did not sit down to put on shoes and socks.
What would you do differently?:

Need to go back to elastic laces and toughen my feet up so I can run without socks for these shorter races. Also look into Altra shoes.
Run
  • 56m 22s
  • 5 miles
  • 11m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

For a little as I've been running, I was very happy with this effort. Still fighting the plantar fasciitis issue, but getting better.
What would you do differently?:

Train more, lose weight, learn to fly.
Post race
Warm down:

Shot of Fireball with the Ryder Bikes team, yes you read that correctly, cross finish line, get medal, grab a cold water, high five teammates, down a cold shot of Fireball.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The approximately 37 pounds of extra fat I'm carrying around.

Event comments:

This used to be a great race, unfortunately this can no longer be said. The first year had some expected difficulties, the second year was better, and the 3rd year was fantastic but for some reason, the last 2 years have gone downhill. This race used to offer a pasta dinner at packet pick up, a scenic run course, music, good food before and after the race, and a huge shade tent to sit and eat. All of that is gone. At this last race, by the time I finished and went to the food line, there was NOTHING left. Very disappointed with the direction things are headed.

Performance: Average
Suit: Ryder Bikes trisuit (old version)
Course: NEW COURSE THIS YEAR - swim start moved to the swim exit, this was done to avoid having to walk past the dumpsters by the restaurant where there was usually broken glass. Course was a 2 loop triangle. From the beach it was southeast to the first buoy then turn right and go straight west until reaching the second buoy where you turned right again then headed towards shore. Second loop was exactly the same.

Course: 2 loop out and back along the clubhouse road. Just for the record, I HATE THIS RUN COURSE!!! The best was the 2 years they ran on the golf course. Please, if you are a Race Director, find something for your racers to look at other than all the people faster than them that are already on their way to the finish line.
