Pre-race routine:

Oatmeal and coffee and JP's parents' house. JP's dad shipped us to the start in his truck (thank god for that truck)! My parents and sister met us at the race. I handed off my camera to my sister so she could capture the magic.
Event warmup:

I have to work on this. I don't think I did anything except make a few runs to the porta-potties. Definitely not enough!
Swim
  • 25m 4s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

I wasn't as nervous once the swim started as I had been previously at the Dash and Bash. I guess that all comes with experience! What's frustrating for me is that I wasn't swimming to my capabilities. I was so concerned with drifting off course that I never got into a groove. I wasn't even tired, but I kept stopping my stroke to float and look at where I was going.
What would you do differently?:

I must practice siting more vigorously if I want to improve my time. I think this could be my strongest event if I take the training more seriously. I guess I didn't do that bad for swimming a total of 3 times for "training."
Transition 1
  • 03m 45s
Comments:

I hope next year I'll have a wet suit so that I can work on taking that off instead of putting on clothes over a wet bathing suit (not easy).
Bike
  • 41m 35s
  • 9.32 miles
  • 13.45 mile/hr
Comments:

It's a very very hilly course, but that's what I'm used to. I definitely had an advantage training in the hills of Newton over most Long Islanders who rarely train on them.

The steepest hill (the one JP threw up on) killed me b/c I couldn't switch to a lower gear. My bike chain was screwed up and that definitley hurt me. I spent more time strugglin with that than the hill.

The end of the bike was so strong for me! I was actually pasing people (which was something that never happened the prior weekend at dash and bash). I powered into the transition and felt great!
What would you do differently?:

Once again, I would love a nicer bike. I also need to work on speed training. This is my weakness and also can make or break you. I want to get better at this event over any of the others!
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

I remembered to take my helmet off!
Run
  • 27m 17s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I love running! I felt great, started off with a solid pace that I was constantly able to maintain. I passed almost everyone I was behind which felt great. So many people do not start off properly on the run and will burst out due to the excitement and crash in half a mile. I know my limitations and what I can handle.

I oddly love running hills. I'm not fast so this is where I get my upper hand through all the hard training we do.

I definitely held back a bit at the end. I was scared of opening up my run to early and crashing. I was also very scared of muscle cramping. I did not drink enough gatorade on the bike and could feel the lack of salt in my body.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more on the bike so that I have a more solid run.
Post race
Warm down:

A lot of walking and stretching. I ended up having a nasty calf cramp after the race that I knew was from lack of hydration.

After the race we went back to JP's parents house for brunch and drinks! JP and I crashed later out of pure exhaustion. Nothing like a post race nap! :-)

Event comments:

This race is one I've watched for 2 years and it felt great to be a part of it this year. I was really impressed with how well I was able to perform in my first year of triathlons. The season is now over for me and it's time to concentrate on running the NYC marathon in November!

I can't wait til next year to incorporate some olympic distance races!
