Comments:

I signed up late for this race, and wasn't really training for a full marathon. The Rogue 30K was my long run leading up to this race. So I knew to try to keep it easy and followed the Rogue pace chart for the 4:44 finish time. https://roguerundown.files.wordpress.com/2016/02/austin-marathon-pac...

What a difference it made going really slowly for the first half. Kept it mostly in zone 2 for the first half. And was able to finish strong.

Race highlights: Ran with Bill until the split. He was good at reminding me to stay slow. Stopped at every water stop and didn't carry water with me. Walked through all the stops. Had Sugar Mama's chocolate cake. Passed Debbie near the top of Exposition before turning onto 35th. First time stopping in a porta-potty in a marathon. Stopped right before crossing 45th on Bull Creek. Grabbed some pretzels at end of Shoal Creek. Saw Karen when I turned onto White Rock Dr. She ran with me until I got to Great Northern. So great seeing her. Also a good reminder to still keep it slow. Saw Melenaie and family on Arroyo Seco. Passed Vanessa a little after that. She looked good, but her knee was hurting. Saw Bill and Chris at Duval and 53rd. Got a biscuit. Passed the runner with the long white beard. Saw Kelly and kids a little further down Duval. Got some water and bacon on 49th and finished my biscuit. Home stretch turning on Duval again after golf course. High fived Rolando turning onto 11th. Running fast at this point. Sprinted through the finish. Felt good passing hundreds of people during the last few miles.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Long walk back to the car drinking my recovery drink.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not training.

Event comments:

Nice 25th anniversary bag, ok t-shirt. Great volunteers and plenty of spectators on the course. A little crowded before the split, but then just right.
