Swim
Comments: Really tried hard not to go out too fast as I always do this and it always gets me. Concentrated on breathing and swimming smooth. Had some trouble getting under the pool lanes but overall I don't think I lost much time from this. What would you do differently?: Nothing actually, I beat my time from last year by nearly 3 minutes so was super pleased, as I was well under the cut off time. Transition 1
Comments: Had to change just coming out of the pool, it had been cold and rainy before the race and I'd been worrying about what to wear during the bike as I'm ALWAYS cold after the swim. So I struggled to put on my long pants, wool shirt and windproof jacket, not an easy task while wet and still panting from the swim. Had to run/walk with the bike for quite a while, including up a hill, before we could mount. Could not get into the clips so was not a great start. What would you do differently?: Don't wear so many clothes! Bike
Comments: This was the worst, I felt like my legs were made of lead, and I felt like I was going so slow! Got passed by people on mountain bikes! Honestly I have no idea what happened, only that I felt awful and was so glad I was just doing 10k, it felt like 100k. Was about 5 min slower this year. Was way too hot in all my clothes, as the sun came out and it was about 16 degrees! What would you do differently?: No idea, obviously I need to get my ass out on the bike more :) Transition 2
Comments: Basically hobbled with the bike to my transition, found out someone had put their bikes in my spot so had to waste time moving a bike so I could rack mine up. Had to rip off all my layers and sat on the ground to put my runners on. Spent too much time fiddling around with my hat, looking for my sunglasses etc and deciding if I should wear a lighter jacket for the run. What would you do differently?: Not give myself so many options for clothing. Just do everything in the damn tri suit, that's why I am wearing it! Run
Comments: My legs were so trashed by this time it was all I could do to shuffle along for the first half of the race. I'd had achilles and PF problems for the past 6 weeks so hadn't done much running and no brick workouts prior to the race. Funny as soon as I started the run, even though I felt like crap, I thought to myself, thank God I'm running! I'd been worried my PF would come back so just shuffled with tiny steps and really had no problems, my heart race was through the roof which was surprising to me and a bit worrying, but there was no way I was going to stop, and was happy to pass most of the people in my group who'd passed me on the bike! Finally found my legs about a km before the end and relied on my years of run races to make it to the finish line at a good clip. Had a guy comment on how great my run looked so that really made me feel good! What would you do differently?: Nothing, I did my absolute best the whole race and was thrilled my achilles didn't act up. Many people were walking up all the hills and there was no way I would do that, I just kept telling myself don't walk, just keep moving. Post race
Warm down: Light stretching, walking to change area, drinking my Vega recovery accelerator and PB&B sandwich. What limited your ability to perform faster: I think I wasn't as well prepared as I thought I would be, both mentally and physically. I probably should have gotten a massage before the race but who knows if that would have helped. Need to toughen up and do more mental training, and I definitely have found my weak link-cycling! Event comments: The volunteers were amazing, I made sure I thanked them because I'm sure they were out there all day and catching flack from people. Well organized race, safe course, medals for all! Got to the race early to pick up my race package and set up my transition. As soon as I got there I found out that the race was running 50 min behind, I was glad I'd brought lots of food! Went to the pool and found a locker, then spent some time watching the Olympic distance swimmers who were starting before my group.
Not much room to warm up, did a short jog before the swim but there was a lot of standing around, I basically just got in and started to swim!
