50F / 10C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 23m 12s
Overall Rank = 14/55
Age Group = M55-59
Age Group Rank = 1/3
Pre-race routine:

Got up in Paso at the regular time. PB & honey, then the drive to Lopez.
Event warmup:

Zilch. Just 50 or 100 before the wave.
Swim
  • 17m 27s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

Yuck! The start had us standing in 3' of muck, then swimming in jet back mucky water for a hundred yards. The water eventual cleared enough to look like a lake that wouldn't kill us.

There was more contact than usual for the first 1/3, then it was a matter of following caps. Fog made navigation hard, but the lake was too narrow to get lost.

This was a two-cap day, and the temperature was fine.
Transition 1
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

3rd overall. My shoes fell off the bike after the timing mat but before the mount line, so that took a few seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Next time, rubber bands on the shoes.
Bike
  • 40m 1s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.64 mile/hr
Comments:

This was steeper and harder than I remember from a few years back, but my speed was okay. I stayed in aero all the way up the hill, even in the granny gear.

I forgot to start my watch for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

28th overall. I'm usually very fast in T's, but not in this one. I probably gave away :30. I didn't get out of my shoes on the bike, and I didn't deal with my hat and bib while moving, like I should have.
Run
  • 23m 22s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was super slow for me. Part of it was the ~240W on the hilly bike, part of it was doing about 2000m of work with fins on Friday in masters. Dumb! What did I learn this week? You have to taper in the pool, too!
Post race
Warm down:

Chatting, eating pizza, keeping track of the results.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Too much work in masters.

Event comments:

Here are the results

The Poly tri team did an exceptional job this year. There were way more than enough volunteers, and the tr team people were very nice.
