Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30 and had breakfast. Left for the race around 5:15, and got there at six. At the race, I set up my transition area, went to the bathroom, then started the warm up with my team.
Event warmup:

10min. easy run
Drills and strides
Stretching
Swim
  • 06m 9s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 03s / 100 yards
Comments:

It started off pretty well, but got really crowded pretty fast. For the most part I was able to swim normally, but about halfway through I had to stop because there were 4 or 5 people at the end of the lane. I was then beaten down by the other swimmers who pushed off at the same time I did.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I couldn't really control how crowded the pool was going to be.
Transition 1
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Overall, it was a smooth and fast transition. I found my bike fine (which s sometimes difficult), put on my helmet, and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Everything was fine for me.
Bike
  • 37m 44s
  • 13 miles
  • 20.67 mile/hr
Comments:

I started out right at the right pace. The road was smooth at first, but then turned into a bumpy, country road for the loop. Cornering was difficult because of the gravel, but I handled it well, despite coming within a foot or two from knocking over a volunteer. I picked up speed during the out and back because I was feeling good and passed a few people. I thought I had gotten a flat at one point, but I must have just imagined it.
What would you do differently?:

There were a few points where could have gone a little harder, but I think it went very well.
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Just an average transition. I went in, took my helmet off, and put my running shoes on. It was a little bit hard to pt my shoes on without any socks and with numb fingers and toes.
What would you do differently?:

Practice putting on my shoes without socks on. Either that or get special tri laces.
Run
  • 21m 41s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 20s  min/km
Comments:

I burst out of transition feeling awesome, but soon realized I went out too fast when my watch said 6:15 pace. I dialed it back and was able to finish feeling not too horrible (which probably means I needed to push harder) At mile 1, I almost choked on a cup of water while trying to not stop running while I drink. Other than that, it was a great run.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe I should have pushed a little harder. I only felt really out of breath at the end when I sprinted to the finish.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and ate a ton of food from the post race table including 4 granola bars, 3 cookies, an apple, a muffin, and a bagel with peanut butter. I then watched the kids race, where one of my teammates got 4th overall.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1. Other swimmers
2. Gravel
3. Wet, numb feet that didn't want to run

Event comments:

Overall a good race. Great for beginning cyclists, the bike course wasn't that hard. Not many post race activities, but there was a kids race that I stayed and watched.
