Swim
Comments: Solid swim. I switched from a DeSoto Full wetsuit to a vest wetsuit. Liked it alot. I hate fatiguing my self physically and mentally, wrestling my wetsuit on over my arms. It was so easy w/a vest. Solid Swim, but not great. Advertised distance was wrong. My guess maybe 400 yds. I can't swim that fast even all out for 100 yds. What would you do differently?: As usual: actually train for the swim. I don't know how I rank almost in the top 1/3 for swimming. Transition 1
Comments: long steep UPHILL struggle from the lake to T1, I think I passed more people in this part of the race than any! Overall quick transition. I didn't do the normal screwups, of dropping something or getting stuck. Bike
Comments: Almost Crashed. After a good climb we had a nice descent. I got the bike up to just under 45 mph. Something I'm not used to. There had been some cones that said "slow" on them. I ignored them. Then after a curve I noticed that there was a 90 degree turn coming up. Uh oh. Panic time. I pulled my rear brake and started to fishtail SHIT! I'm gonna eat it! I ended up swerving out of the lane to regain control. phew. Regained control. I started looking for the "slow" signs after that. Stong bike. It pays to train on hills. Some people were dying. Listed as 900 ft of climbing, a fair amount for 10 miles. Sounds about right. People were not staying to the right. It got annoying. What would you do differently?: give more credence to caution signs. I thought I knew how to handle a bike. I don't. I need to practice quick stops. I'm told that you should actually be using the front brake more, I've never heard that before. Transition 2
Comments: love my quicklaces. solid transition. Run
Comments: A tough run, w/lots of up and down. I was fairly solid, certainly didn't fall apart. But I feel like I'm running in place when someone passes w/ any amount of speed. What would you do differently?: Not much except train like a real triathlete. If I ran 20 miles a week I think I could drop times significantly Post race
Warm down: walked a litte, stretched a little, drank a lot of gatorade endurance. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training, altitude. Event comments: Very good well organized race. great scenery around the lake. Learned some lessons about bike handling, and paying attention to signs. I deserved to be DQ'd. I was unsafe and could have hurt myself. Descent back from clean air into thick brown clouds of inland empire was obscene. Swim distance was way shorter than advertised. Tough sprint because of the hilly bike, hilly run, even hilly transition along with 5000 ft of altitude. Apparently some people really sucked wind due to the elev. Last updated: 2006-08-21 12:00 AM

Cliff Bar, COFFEE, drove up from Redlands to Lake Arrowhead, took a wrong turn, arrived nice and early, no traffic. Pumped up the tires. Pre-race ritual of crapping my guts out. Feeling more comfortable getting my equipment together before a race, brought everything I needed.
jumped in the water, swam maybe 100 yds. After 10 strokes I was 45 degrees off course. Woops. I'd better do some sighting during the race.
