Run
Comments: Hot! Though the day only reached 25'C the previous day was 37'C so the 6am start was at 20'C. Normally for such a start at this time of year it would be 14'C. Plus it was very windy meaning that the first half of each lap was into the wind, but the second half was with it behind. This meant that between 10 and 21km and 31 and 42km it was behind so with no cooling effect whatsoever. Ran the first half in 1:45. then crashed in the last half to do 2:15!! Not a pacing issue just heat stress - and I didn't realise this until after the race and it became apparent that medics were on the course frequently to attend to heat stressed competitors, What would you do differently?: No injury?, Not run on very heat stressed course? So really nothing that i could have had any control over on the day. Post race
Warm down: Coke, banana, hotdog, walk to shuttle bus back to Perth. What limited your ability to perform faster: The calf injury which took out 8 weeks of scheduled training. But despite that I had expected to run 3:45. The real killer on the day was the heat - I've never walked any aid station until this race and never had to bother with pouring water over myself to keep cool. At the last aid station I was quite sure I was about to vomit (Didn't as it turned out) and this has never happened either. That which doesn't kill us only makes us stronger!! Event comments: Great international race! Encourage everyone to do it if it is in their country Last updated: 2016-06-14 12:00 AM
