Swim
Comments: Ran down the right side of the start wave with the middle of the pack. (It was men 40-49 with about 56 or so racers). Stuck to the right side of the pack. Because the water was so unclear I couldn't really tell where others were. On the way back to the beach, I stuck to the right (as the announcer said). I got caught behind some of the swimmers in the group ahead of me which slowed me down. I took it easy on the swim because I was unsure what to make of the kelp and the water was so cold. The kelp wasn't that bad. I chose the swim through it route instead of swimming around it. I didn't get caught or stuck at all. I think this was also the most comfortable I have felt for an open water race (this being my 4th) even though I did very few open water swims before the race. What would you do differently?: Start going harder after the first buoy or even from the start. My other open water races have been 800 or 1500 M. 400 is over with super fast. Transition 1
Comments: I got a great transition spot for coming out of the swim. (It turned out to be a bad one for the run) I forgot my race belt. So I put the number on my shirt and tried to put my shirt on in T1. This easily cost me 1 minute. What would you do differently?: Don't forget race belt Bike
Comments: Out and back course on a really scenic road. It goes up and down but the grade isn't too much. You go out 3 miles and back to the start and then repeat. Some people missed the turnaround for the second lap. On the first lap I dropped my water bottle and had to go back for it. Got my PR for 20 K on this race. What would you do differently?: Not dropping water bottle. Also not slowing for drinking water. Transition 2
Comments: You run away from the bike dismount to the bike rack. I was a bit far. I also forgot to take my helmet off. I should have gone faster. Run
Comments: Very fast course. I was keeping pace with someone then got distracted and they pulled away on the first lap. Kept focus on the second lap. Has a little hill that plays mind tricks on you. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I was very happy with my time. Post race
Warm down: I didn't really do anything. What limited your ability to perform faster: I could have done better on the transitions. Event comments: This is the most organized race that I have been to. Super fast course that you can push yourself on. The Kelp Crawl for the swim is fun (or I thought so) Last updated: 2016-06-15 12:00 AM

The race didn't start until 8:40. I thought great. However, I still woke up at 6. Ate my normal breakfast of oatmeal + raisin bran. Biked to the transition area. Set up my transition area. (They give you a specific spot to set up.) Talked to the guy next to me who was super nice.
Biked to the transition area (2 miles?). Ran 1 loop of the run course (1 mile). Swam around a little before the race and during the first 2 heats.
They encourage you to warm up in the water. Very beneficial to get used to the water and the kelp.
