Pre-race routine:

Ate oatmeal for breakfast and skipped morning coffee. I had packed everything the night before so I went right to the race
Event warmup:

Ran 1/2 a mile on the track. Some people were warming up in the other pool with the master's class, including 1 guy in a wet suit, but I wasn't sure if we were allowed to
Swim

  • 400 meters
  • 02m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

You leave every 10 seconds and are seeded on how fast you say you swim a 400 in. I passed the guy in front of me and got out 5 or 6 seconds second or so before him. This means I gained 15 seconds on him in the swim. However, he ran to the mat and I jogged. So I lost all but 1 of the seconds I gained.
What would you do differently?:

Run to the mat.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Put my bike on the inside lane in the transition area. Quick transition.
What would you do differently?:

Run from the mat.

Comments:

Finished off my water bottle (with an energy drink in it) before the run.
Run
  • 25m 28s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 05s  min/km
Comments:

I did better than I expected since I hadn't done as much hill training as I had wanted to.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched and watched people come in. No massage this year.

Event comments:

I really like this race. It is challenging with the hills but a good early season race (especially since the swim is in a pool.)

Course: Leave the transition area and run in the housing area behind the school. This involves running up 2 hills and back down again. The first hill is short so it isn't that bad. The second one seems long. People that live on the course are often outside encouraging you especially near the top of the second hill. You finish the race doing 3/4ths of a lap on the track.
