Pre-race routine:

Got up about 3:00 AM. Breakfast. Coffee. Poop of course. Drove to Boji about 2 hours away. Set up in transition. Ready to roll.
Event warmup:

Not much. Little jogging. Little swimming.
Swim
  • 14m 36s
  • 1056 yards
  • 01m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim went well. top 5 swim time overall.
Little bumpy at times. Me and another guy were all over each other until we separated out.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Transition 1
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Wet suit got stuck on my watch and that damn timing chip. That chip must be at least 1.5 inches thick.
Left calf cramped up bad trying to get my foot out. Ended up nagging me the rest of the race.
What would you do differently?:

More hydration before the race to prevent the cramp. Not sure why that happened though. It wasn't hot at all. The swim was only 1,000 yards and I felt really good the entire time.
Bike
  • 48m 54s
  • 18 miles
  • 22.09 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was good. I didn't hit my goal of 23 mph but was in the 22 mph range average. Still that's good considering my overall lack of bike training this year.
What would you do differently?:

More time in the seat.
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Good t2. I still run with socks. Not changing that.
Almost dropped my bike trying to rack it.

Run
  • 37m 45s
  • 4.5 miles
  • 08m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Run sucked but that's due to training. Got passed a few times. No big surprise considering my 8:13 pace.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Duh

Post race
Warm down:

none. water food gatorade

Event comments:

I really enjoy the Okoboji Triathlon. It is well organized. Well supported. And it's usually very competitive for those that want to race fast but it is also a race that people can test out the open water swim for the first race. They allow wet suits regardless of water temps and I appreciated that this year.

I signed up late this year and the guys at Three Sons are always easy to work with. I will continue to keep this race on my schedule and consistently suggest it to my tri crazy friends.

If you are ever in the area around the end of July, give this one a try.
