Swim
Comments: I felt a slight panic when I got in, and I chickened out with swimming freestyle, and swam the side stroke for about 98% of the race. I was still really nervous about the swim, and my goggles got a little fogged up today, or it could just be that it was kind of dark, or the fact that I never found a good open space, but I was nervous to put my face in, so I DEFINATELY need to work on that for next time. There were a few parts where I got kicked, or pushed, but for the most part, it was ok, except at the end, when we were getting ready to round the bouy, and some guy in a blue cap pretty much pushed me down, and swam over me to get to the stairs quicker...what an ass!! Gasoline smell didn't bother me so much, didn't think it was as bad as everyone was making it out to be. I have to keep up practicing the OWS, and actually doing the freestyle swim. Being that this was my first race post P-Tine, and I just wanted to make sure I was ok, I think a smaller race will be good to practice the swimming correctly, I just chickened out this time, and getting jostled in there. What would you do differently?: Swim the freestyle more, like I've been practicing in the lake down at Ohio street. Being that I didn't put my face in the water all that much, that is why I give myself the below average rating. Transition 1
Comments: Having practiced coming in from the swim running up through the aisle to rack #8, felt really good about this transition. Loved having my bike where it was, by the bike out/bike in area. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: Legs were very heavy when I got onto the bike, probably due to the fact that I was just kicking a lot in the water. Could have gone a little faster, so I should really practice this before next race. Need to figure out when is a good time to take in some liquids, and when to haul ass and pick up some time. What would you do differently?: See Above. Transition 2
Comments: I was really quick in this transition. Pretty much ripped helmet off, and hung bike up quickly, grabbed race belt, and I was off. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Ok, I either have aggravated the old Cross Country oblique injury on the right side, or I was severely cramped. Had the stabbing pain on the right side, under ribcage everytime I took a breath. Didn't go away for the majority of the race, and as I can see from the time, (worst 5k time in a LONG time), my overall time suffered because of it. Other than that, I felt really strong, even after coming off bike. Also, right side of neck that has been flaring up hurt a lot in the first mile, but then the pain subsided. What would you do differently?: Hope that my side is ok. Post race
Warm down: Finished around 8:15-8:20ish. Had A LOT of time between end of race, and the time transition opened back up (11:00). Next year, make sure you check a bag at the swim check with a shirt (I was freezing while waiting around), and anything else you want or plan to go somewhere if you don't want to watch the other participants. Did some light stretching after and a little jogging (was this more to keep warm???) What limited your ability to perform faster: Swim-MUST get more comfortable in water, but this will come with time. Bike-just bike a little harder, practice more. Run-need to get that right side looked at. Have an appt. at Athletico on Tuesday, 8/29 to have it looked at. Event comments: For my first Sprint, overall, just really happy that I finished. Know where I need to work on stuff to improve, with the majority of it in the swimming portion, but like I said earlier, I think that will come with time. Just basic anxiety that I need to get over. The fact that I suffer from claustriphobia at times, depending on the situation I'm sure doesn't help, but I've noticed it gets better. The fact that I almost got jumped on at the start of this race by a girl 4x my size, didn't help either. I think Accenture did a wonderful job of putting this race on. Need to get more practice, probably would be good to get some practice out in the burbs next year so I get some hill training. REALLY hope that my oblique muscle isn't torn again, I'm a little worried about that. But, being that this was my last "race" for the year, then I should be able to get some treatment, and rest. Hopefully after I got to the doctor tomorrow, I will feel less stressed about it, and he'll tell me it's ok. Race #1-Done...moving on and down (timewise) next time!! Last updated: 2006-08-23 12:00 AM

Woke up at 2:30 to use the restroom and couldn't really back to sleep before I had the alarm go off at 3:45. Had a tablespoon full of peanut butter, and some fruit punch gatorade. Did some mild stretching (made sure to stretch out back/neck on ball) while I paced around the house. Also sat for about 10 minutes with the ice pack on my back, right side, lower (where I felt it pull while running that day @ Alli's).
Got in the cab around 4:20-4:25, and was down there by 4:35, and found #8's bike rack, and we were right by the bike in, and bike out so that was awesome. I was able to get my bike right by the tree in the first section (so glad I got there early!!). Laid out my stuff, went to the restroom again, practiced the run from the swim into transition to my stuff, so felt acclamated as to where I would go in a few hours.
Had a 1/2 of a powebar (carmel peanut infusion triple threat) and some more fruit punch gatorade. Did a little more stretching, not too much.
Headed down to transition, after one more potty break, around 5:55, while I was walking, saw they started the first heat. So, I stopped between the start and finish, and put on the wetsuit. At this point, there was a bit of a mist coming down, not too bad, felt good.
