Pre-race routine:

Welcomed in the new year the night before then woke up too early and drove to race later than planned.
Event warmup:

stood in line for the Johnny on the spot and got real cold. Walked & jogged to my car and back to drop off packet stuff and extra clothes.

Comments:

The plan was to run at 8:00 pace and finish around 1:45.

Phase 1: Ran the first 5.8 miles with Otte and Pete, Pete dropped back a bit. Stopped at the port-a-potty at 5.8 just as another guy was pulling in there too, it took 2 minutes by the time he was done, I was done, Otte was done AND to get a drink at the adjoining aid station. Otte and I kept pushing the pace a little, realizing it, and then trying to slow down, splits were between 7:28 and 7:42 the whole way.

Phase 2: 3.2 miles from 5.8-~9 miles from the aid station up the hill to the turn-around and back past the aid station. Caught back up with Pete, spent about 1 minute at the aid station as we grouped back up. Effort here was a bit harder, pace was roughly 7:20-7:30 but there was the climb up Mt Boutox.

Phase 3: Last 4.1 miles, held an effort bordering on uncomfortably hard and finish strong, these were pretty much 7 flat +/- a few seconds except for the climb up Nall from the bike path, that mile was at 7:20 and ruined any hopes for finishing under 1:40.
What would you do differently?:

nothing, perfect way to welcome in the new year. On second thought, I do need to get Sarah the Dog running more and further, there was a guy who ran about 1:35 with a little cocker spaniel, I kinda laughed when they went out at the pace they did, didn't think the dog would hang on but he obviously runs a lot, it would have been really nice to run with Sarah.
Post race
Warm down:

crammed into the store and had a dixie cup of beer while BSing for a few minutes then headed home.

Event comments:

This was a great $20 race, they billed it as a timed training run, got a beanie, a mug, a small post race spread with a bunch of like minded people.
