Pre-race routine:

Made it to Kathy G's for the tail end of the BT gathering- (THANKS Kathy- for hosting and on the eve of your A race to boot)Stayed locally-did a little late night course reconnaisance -slept about 3 hrs - up & showered- repacked car- dressed with an outside warmer layer & brkfst of coffee & blueberries & yogurt with opt power on top.got a later start to site than planned so felt a bit rushed. usuual last minute antsy-ness..pumped up leaky back tube, filled H2O bottles.sorry to miss Kathy's planned pre race BT photo shoot...registration & marking- set up all well organized & quick..decided to forego wetsuit..back to car for gel..great to see many smiling BT faces briefly at different points setting up ..and DK racked very close to me .
Event warmup:

does running back to the car for gel count? slapping kathy g hi 5 at swim start?

Comments:

Would wetsuit have helped? don't know- swim is the weak link for me..comfortable in the water- just lousy technique & so-so endurance!
Breast stroked til the pack cleared out- rest of swim just cruised alternating free & breast..race swimming for me is all about getting thru it- not about speed.Never saw Ellen- Kathy & Amanda blew by me early on..
just took in the cottages along the edge- the sounds of the other swimmers, the kayakers keepin watch, the interesting bottom vegetation- and eventually clambered out with relief to get on with things ..no goggle issues, felt fine post swim exertion wise,L shoulder making itself known.ususal vertigo on exit,,so it goes.
What would you do differently?:

be a swimmer.

Comments:

A little disappointing for me- I can ride better than this. I debated cranking it up towards the end but was afraid would crash on the run..doesn't really matter- had fun.
What would you do differently?:

Take better cae of Pearl & equip - do a thorough pre race check. Not ride 30 hilly miles 2 days before the race for fun after a hilly int'l distance race a week ago...

Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

need to practice this- I dismount like I'm coming home to the garage! Could save some time if practiced & got more efficient.took 1/2 a gel again.

Comments:

legs a bit tight at beginning & hammy like a toothache pretty much from middle of bike on- but tolerable..this run felt pretty good & in retrospect probably could have picked up pace a lttle earlier each time-making my overall time a bit better..

Post race
Warm down:

walked & had a water- hung out with the incredible BT Posse cheering rest of gang in- at one point got really chilly - missed a few buds crossing finish- sorry guys- while I went to grab sweatshirt & hit port a potty.

Event comments:

Performance wise- just an OK race for me- but overall experience wise- a great race. Happy to be racing- a real treat to spend time with a great group of BT friends old & new.
Too many highlights to list-some of our BTers really showed their stuff simply by showing up-never mind doing as well as they did- Proud to know em.
Won a wet suit in the raffle (1st 2 picks had already left)..this is notable because I NEVER ever win stuff like that...AG placing a surprise given the quality of my performance-so that was nice too.
Planets must have been aligned- even the rain held off til afternoon in this "Season of Precipitation"!
A Happy Dance Life is Good weekend for sure.

slow clipping in, but got into cruisin ok..little chilly, drank a bit right off..legs felt "ok" not terribly fresh but not terrible either..settled in at an ok pace- computer not working so just blindly riding..somewhere around mi 10? was feeling pretty good & starting to pick up a bit ..heard noise & felt a hesitation- looked down & saw that frame pump had come out of its clamp & was hanging open by a velcro strap - reached down to try & clip it in -no go- then it started swinging-yup-into front wheel spokes-damn!moment of indecision- keep riding? no- too risky..fortunately noone right behind me- clipped out & stopped - but in frustration of the moment not able to just snap in yanked off the velcro & stuck the damn pump into my tri top for the rest of the ride! cursed a blue streak as a whole bunch of riders went by me.. but once back riding tried to focus again & be grateful that I just lost time- didn't crash or cause anyone else to. Lesson learned- Do a better bike check. Was able to catch up & pass a few
Wind: Some
Course: Mostly rural & scenic- - water on both sides at one point- few rough sections few really smooth but overall not bad & very minimal traffic issues. Would have liked more mile markers, but course marking & volunteers were adequate. Few "packs" of riders- clearly drafting- don't know if they got cited or not.
