Transition 1
Comments: Long transition space... Run from beach to tent. Indoor transition where athletes collect and rehang transition bags before exiting to the bike area. Since this is a 3000 person race the T-zone is a full size soccer field. I did stop to get some sunscreen before leaving transition. What would you do differently?: No changes Bike
Comments: I finished the bike course 2 minutes slower than the time I predicted to my support crew. I know I could be in better shape and be faster on this course, but was right where I expected based on my training program. What would you do differently?: Additional training (consistency and long rides) would have made for a faster bike. I bonked for about 30 minutes during the bike. I should have taken on extra nutrition sooner, but tried to fight through it for a bit. As soon as I had some extra nutrition I was back to normal. Transition 2
Comments: No Changes What would you do differently?: No Changes Run
Comments: Overall a great run. I stayed on my planned 5 min/km pace through the first 18 miles. In the closing 8 miles I had to walk through about 4 aid stations. The walk breaks slowed my overall race pace to 8:40 min/mile pace instead of my target pace of 8 min/mile. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with my run performance. What would you do differently?: No Changes. Post race
Warm down: No warm down other than walking about 1.5 miles back to our house. What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall my performance finished right where I expected. My training plan was fairly inconsistent and atypical as my first child was born in May. Training for 4 months with a new born was quite a challenge. Inconsistency in training definitely was the limiting factor, however, I'm completely pleased with my results. Event comments: Ironman Barcelona is a great race for all ability levels. I think the field was roughly 50% first time Ironman athletes. Calella and Barcelona are very hospitable to the athletes and the race. It's a great event to put on your calendar if you would like to race in Europe. Last updated: 2017-02-04 12:00 AM
