Swim
Comments: Goggles rode up on my face when I dove in. Did the first 50 meters with goggles filled with water. Took in some water while trying to breathe. A bad start! Re-grouped at the wall at 100 meters and finished the swim a full 90 seconds slower than my usual practice swim. What would you do differently?: i would have jumped in the pool rather than dive in. That is my usual method in practice and I shouldn't have deviated on race day. Transition 1
Comments: T1 was kind of a blur after the bad swim. I jogged into transition, took off my goggles, put on my helmet, wiped off my feet, put on sock, shoes, grabbed the bike and jogged out What would you do differently?: Transition time was slow. I took too long wiping off feet and was too deliberate in all of my movements. Should have been a minute faster here Bike
Comments: Bike portion was good. I maintained a good steady effort without ever pushing too hard. I didn't want to sabotage the run by pushing too hard on the bike. What would you do differently?: I think I could have pushed a bit harder on the bike. I also didn't drink enough on the bike. Transition 2
Comments: Took way too long in T2. Spent too much time drinking as I was thirsty off the bike. Then when I started running out of transition my race belt fell off as it apparently hadn't been snapped closed. What would you do differently?: Drink more on the bike. Practice transitions. Make sure race belt is secure. Run
Comments: My best event against the field and age group but I ran a bad race. I came out of T2 WAY too fast - about 16% faster than my desired pace in the first 1/2 mile. This made the rest of the race brutal and I finished about a minute slower than my goal. What would you do differently?: Need to practice running pace off the bike. My Garmin 920 is never reliable in the first 1/2 mile, so my thought is to get a footpod to pair with the watch for better real time pace information. Post race
Warm down: Walking and dynamic stretching along with a post race smoothie provided by the race organizer What limited your ability to perform faster: Need more practice in transitions and better pacing of the run off the bike Event comments: Great event for a worthwhile cause (Down's Syndrome). Lots of enthusiastic volunteers. The race organizer Jerry does a fantastic job. Last updated: 2017-02-22 12:00 AM
