Pre-race routine:

First tri of the year for me...opting for a very short sprint.

I've raced at this venue more times than I can remember...still managed to miss a turn on the way.

Got set up really early...only really knew one other person in the race. Chatted with a couple folks, but mostly just hung out in transition.
Event warmup:

Nothing much. Had some issues with my left ankle this week...wanted to avoid aggravating it, since I was otherwise--finally--healthy.

Suit hung up on first attempt to step out of left leg. I was prepared for that and didn't waste time trying again. Pulled cuffs off with my hands. Got socks on pretty efficiently this time.
What would you do differently?:

I cut the cuffs of my sleeveless suit back after getting stuck at my last race in October. May want to see if I can cut them further.

Uneventful except that I felt a bad shimmy at the bottom of the one huge descent. Since I recently had to replace a damaged wheel, I didn't want to take any chances and stopped to make sure I wasn't getting a flat. Cost me probably 10-15 seconds, which didn't affect any of my placements.
What would you do differently?:

Not succumb to paranoia...that's the second time I've made that same stop...probably the pavement there.

I flat out killed this. Lots of people whining about the hills and rocks on the course, but I nailed it. Negative split the whole way (all 3 mile splits sub-7:00) and felt good. Got some jaw drops from people I blew by and some kudos afterward.

Warm down:

Walked around. Bought a pair of my favorite Zoot tri shorts for $25 from a vendor! Got my 1st place AG medal on an honest-to-goodness podium.

Don't know that I've ever had back-to-back age group wins in any races ever...today makes three AG wins in a row (Victory for Victims road 5K, Verdugo Mountains trail 10K, and this sprint tri). It's been a long haul coming back from a series of injuries...and I still have some ankle, hip flexor, and hammie issues at times...but I'm reaping the rewards of staying fast after 55.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just the paranoia about the bike wheel shimmy.

Event comments:

This is actually the third in an annual three race series that has been going on for 35 years. Very friendly, grass-roots-y, feel, but actually pretty well organized. Top women Michellie Jones and Julie Ertel showed up and raced, in the sprint and the Oly respectively...kinda cool to finish just ahead of Michellie Jones (although my wave started 6 minutes ahead of hers).
