Pre-race routine:

Drank a sugar-free energy drink and ate a cookie on the drive to the race site. Set up my transition, Used my Compex unit on my calves to try to loosen them up.

Forgot to water to rinse the sand off of my feet. Had to suck water out of my aero bottle and spit onto my feet (that was a first).

Was going at a sub-8 pace out of transition, legs felt great. A little more than 1/2 mile into the run I started having severe pain in my middle toe on my left foot. Turns out that on one of the decents I tore my toe nail in 1/2 and it was bent back and caught on my shoe. Pace slowed quite a bit and I even walked some. Finally got on a road for the last 1/2 mile and hit a sub-6 pace for a good part of it.
What would you do differently?:

Not break a toe nail.

Small race put on by the Clinton YMCA. Events are were on time, course was fun, and volunteers were great.
