Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:40am Ate 2 small bagels with honey. Drank 20oz of water. Drove 2 hours to Hendersonville, TN. Racked bike. Signed in and got my timing chip. 1 Gu gel at 7am.
Event warmup:

Walked 1/2 mile to lake and swam 50 yds.
Swim
  • 09m 1s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 15s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started 106 out of 310. I took a fist to the face in the first 100 yds by a young racer. He kept apologizing while he was swimming. It really threw my rythmm off. After about another 100 yds of thrashing I started getting it back. Finished strong. The first swim to run transition time was added to the swim time.
What would you do differently?:

I entered this race with a slow swim time so I could chase people. It ended up backfiring because I passed 6 people in the first 100 yards on the swim but I ended up getting punched in the face while swimming by a slower swimmer.
Transition 1
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Very smooth with running shoes off and bike shoes and helmet on.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 36m 24s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.78 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a really good, solid ride. The course was very technical with a lot of turns and those hills. I was able to stay aero on my road bike on the downhills and picked up a lot of speed for going back up the next hill. Only one TT bike passed me and I passed him back on the next hill. I passed a lot of people on the hills.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

Almost ran out with my bike helmet on.
What would you do differently?:

Unclip the helmet after getting off the bike so I don't forget to take it off.
Run
  • 24m 12s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

The first run was very hilly and I was still trying to burp from drinking lake water. By the second run it was getting a lot hotter out. My times were still about what I run 3 miles in.
What would you do differently?:

I had a lot left at the end. I kind of started my last kick a little late. I need to work on getting faster on my running.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of water. Talked to SpecialK and Steve. My named got called for 3rd place in age group but they had me in the wrong age group. I did the honest thing and straightened them out. Ended up 4th in my age group by only 14 seconds.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I did my first Olympic distance tri last Sunday and a bike wreck 2 weeks ago so I was both sore and tired.

Event comments:

As my last tri of the year I went in with the attitude give it everything you got. This ended up being the best race of this year. I know what I need to work on in the off season. It's now Thursday and I'm still tired from Saturday's race. Taking a 5 day weekend to recooperate.
