Pre-race routine:

Had breakfast and a bottle of sports drink in order to begin to hydrate. Packed the car and waited for the kids to be ready. Got to Lisa's house and we drove to Freeport.
Event warmup:

We racked our bikes and got our things ready. Got our chips and checked out transition area. I got lost at Cinco so I did not want to the same thing this time. Went to see the lake. Still get nervous with the swim.

  • 500 meters
  • 03m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

Lisa and I decided to do this triathlon together. We were there to have fun. She stayed with me in the swim and helped me calm my breathing. This was the first salt water swim for me. Much better lake than Cinco Ranch lake. We took our time and went into T1 together.
What would you do differently?:

I need to have my shoulder checked so I can improve my swim time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

Had a gel. Got my bike gloves on. I know that slows me down in T1 but they help my hands. Lisa and I left together.
What would you do differently?:

Practice T1.

Comments:

The bike course felt really good. Lisa and I stayed together. I kept the right distance from her so I would not get penalized. We were doing an easy pace. Manage to keep my bottle this time, (I lost my bottle at Cinco). There was a nice cool breeze. We were doing fine until we saw THE BRIDGE. I had never been to Freeport so I was not familiar with it. It was a surprise. I just said to my self "you have got to be kidding". I could see a woman that decide to walk her bike. After all the hills sessions at spinning class I did not want to walk my bike. I followed Lisa and began to shift. I figure that as long as cement was moving under my tires I would make it. On the other side I breaked a little as I could see a turn ahead. I have fallen twice already so I did not want to hit the ground. I caught up with Lisa as she had gotten ahead. She had no more energy so I tried to "push" her along. Finally I got ahead of her figuring that I would do a better job "pulling" her. It worked. We were doing better. On the way back the bridge felt better, still painful, but better. We let go on the other side. It was fun.
What would you do differently?:

Train more hills. Work on increasing pedaling speed.
Transition 2
  • 02m 18s
Comments:

Got a little confused as to the order of things.
What would you do differently?:

Practice, practice, practice.
Run
  • 47m 10s
  • 3 miles
  • 15m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Lisa and I began running however, we ran out of energy fast. My legs felt really tight. We kept each other going. The weather was nice and the course was fun. We did a little spring at the end. Where we got the energy I have no idea. The cold towels at the finish line are great. I love those. Volunteers were awesome.
What would you do differently?:

Train more running. I really need to improve this area. I am very, very slow.
Post race
Warm down:

We got some water and rise with the hose. The salt was burning in the body especially my face. Got something to eat and drank some recovery drink. I have found that this really helps. Got my shoulder checked by the chiropractic. I need to have it checked because I have a nerve that is very irritated and swollen.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to loose more weight and train more. I feel I have accomplish a great deal on my first year and never having done anything like this before.

Event comments:

I will do this race next year. I really liked the course.
