Swim
Comments: Swim was ok. I did a little better sighting but I definetly need more practice. I swam off course a couple times. Toward the end I was swimming in some weeds. One a good note I managed to do a little drafting which I've never done. Made it interesting. What would you do differently?: Do more swimming closer to race day. Definetly need to practice sighting a LOT more. Make sure I had some pre-race water. I don't know if this hurt me physically or not but mentally it did. Transition 1
Comments: I took it a little slower than I could have. I had to put my knee "brace" on. Ate a Gu and drank some water. Honestly, I wasn't in much of a rush here. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. I just wanted to complete this race so I wasn't that concerned with time here. I remembered to put on my glasses this time :) Bike
Comments: Bike started off on a fairly steep hill which was really hard for me. My heart rate was pretty high from the swim plus I was trying to take it easy due to my knee. Once I got out to 563 I was ok and started to cruise. I was probably 1-3+ gears too easy for the whole course to protect my knee. Second loop I went a little harder. At the 2nd have of the 2nd lap I started to get a bad cramp in my side. I don't know if it was a side sticker or gas. Made the end of the bike VERY difficult and I had to stand and try to stretch a lot to "try" to help it...which it didn't. What would you do differently?: Hard to say since I had knee concerns. I could have done better for sure but at least I finished and didn't have to quit from pain. I wish I knew why I got the side pain at the end of the bike. Transition 2
Comments: Someone decided to rack there bike on top of my stuff. They had their bags next to the rack (at the end) instead of where you normally put them. I think they must have showed up late and were desperate to find a spot. What would you do differently?: Not get as upset when someone was in my spot. I guess it's part of the sport. Remember my race bib. Run
Comments: BAD! My side was still killing me. I tried walking to get my heart rate down but just couldn't. Every time I tried to run I would get a sharp pain in my side and I could feel my heart rate spike like crazy. It took about 3 miles to get the pain bareable. By that time a lot of my motivation was gone. My knee bothered me a little.Mostly I just couldn't push myself through the overall discomfort of knee, hamstrings, side even though I should have been able to for the second half. Overall I walked half the course. What would you do differently?: I wish I knew what I could have done to get rid of the side pain. I didn't even have a chance to test my knee because of how quickly my side forced me to walking. Of course I could have trained more long runs. Post race
Warm down: Talked with Mom, Harry, Holly, Kaylie. Drank some Gatoraid and water and ate some pizza. What limited your ability to perform faster: Worrying about my knee limited me more than the knee pain itself I think. Mostly my side sticker killed me. Added 45 min to the run and slowed me one the bike quite a bit as well. Event comments: Pre-race water would have been nice. Even people working the booths didn't have water for themselves. Having both races going on at the same time caused some confusion as well. Course marking could have been better. More people needed to keep things smooth I think. Last updated: 2006-09-01 12:00 AM

Took Max for a walk. Ate 2 Turkey,Cheese,Egg on Whole Wheat Bagels. Drank some coffee and water. Drove to race.
No stretching because I was still worried about how my knee was going to hold up. Swam about 100 yds to warm up. THERE WAS NO PRE-RACE WATER AVAILABLE. < They made us get out of the transition area for the Half IM that was starting so I couldn't get any water.
