Swim
Comments: Felt good without wetsuit. A bit of boat fuel in the water, but not a lot. Stayed clear of contact most of the way. Targeted a split under 10 minutes, but just missed. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. Lost some training to the back injury (but was coming off a half iron right before the injury). Transition 1
Comments: Wanted 2 minutes or better...basically hit it. Nice not shedding a wetsuit. If I didn't wear socks, it would have saved the better part of a minute: Did take the time to dry my feet a little. 3rd in AG, 49th o/a. What would you do differently?: Maybe not be quite so anal about drying my feet... Bike
Comments: Arguably my best bike finish ever. Not sure I've ever won my AG on the bike in 11 seasons...don't think I've been top 10 overall, either. Hammered this the whole way. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 2
Comments: Hit my goal of under a minute. 1st in AG, 23rd overall. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Killed this. Officially 2nd overall, but in the interest of fair play, I'm gonna acknowledge that one of the 5 guys who wore wetsuits and therefore couldn't place officially did just beat my run split. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Felt great even though I was really undertrained. Post race
Warm down: Walked around. Checked results. Had to kill two hours waiting for awards. What limited your ability to perform faster: Took 3 weeks off from running in June (two weeks off from swimming and dialled back riding). Event comments: I'm maybe being a little hard on this race with my number rating, but it is pretty low key in most respects and the bike course is neither marked nor adequately marshalled...I almost took wrong turns twice and I talked to a couple other people who did go off course. Nice medals and shirts. Very, very good race for a newbie to take on. Last updated: 2018-08-18 12:00 AM

Last minute signup...local race I'd talked about doing for years. Spent last 12 weeks rehabbing mid-back injury, triggered by an apparent compression fracture in the T-9 vertebra some since my last x-ray 18 months ago. Felt good enough by Wednesday of week to pull the trigger, but decided to wait a couple more days...long enough to roll an ankle on a trail run on Thursday evening. However, both the back and the ankle were sound by late Saturday, so I got up at 5 am and headed out to the race site (only 15 minutes away).
In order to reduce strain on my back from the weight of my transition bag, I'd decided to do the 500m swim without wetsuit. As it turned out, there was no decision to make: Water temps were 80F, so not wetsuit-legal. Perfect! Did the whole race in just tri shorts...no jersey, tri-top, or shirt...a first for me.
Nothing. Taking it easy on my back and ankle.
