Pre-race routine:

As usual, got to the venue early to set up transition and was greeted by wicked rain. 73 degrees and not wet suit legal, with warm water and recent warm weather. The rain chilled a lot of us and certainly drenched everyone setting up. Forgot a lot of things, unusual for me: towel(s), body-glide, visor. Even almost forgot to pump my tires-more likely to happen when you don't bring a pump. TBT was great in getting bike set and helping with pedals.

Event warmup:

Planned minimal warmup with my wave being second to last. Seemed like we had to wait forever. Got a bit nervous without the neoprene.

  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

First OWS race without a wet suit and it played with my head a bit. I have emerged from this experience with the knowledge and confidence that I CAN swim, even if not fast.

Comments:

I held pace very well until mile 40, then I had to really pull it back. My back was super sore and I couldn't hold aero position-worse in the wind.

What would you do differently?:

hold aero better-and power

Comments:

Hot as Hell. Cramps were bad but didn't force me to walk, for a change.

What would you do differently?:

Go even slower at the beginning.
Post race
Warm down:

Didn't move for 15 minutes. Then ate a little. I liked the rice. Pizza was terrible. Waited until awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weather. Cramps. Probably inter-related.

Event comments:

Great race. Loved the competition. Weather was a challenge.

Course: The swim was in Larry and Penny's crystal clear lake/pond. The start is on the North side of the beach and swim a .6 mile loop clockwise around the lake. Go out, turn left at first buoy, then out to the far side of the pond, around another buoy and back towards transition. After one loop, exit the water, run through the arch and across the scoring line, then re-enter the water and swim a 2nd lap straight out and back. Participants will encounter an aid station with drinks and food between the swim exit and the transition area. The swim course and the crystal clear lake were extremely popular with last year's participants as it was voted the 2nd best thing about the race, just edged out by the run course and followed by our volunteers.

Held 21.9 mph. Power goal was initially 195/200, then I decided to cut it back to 185/190. Final-183 AP/191 NP

Course: Through farmland areas of unincorporated Miami-Dade county (the Redlands), all on paved roads of course, and will encounter very little vehicular traffic. Roads were in decent shape and the ride is very boring and flat. The multiple (~20+!) 90 degree corners requires cyclists to hold their line or crash. I saw a few on the ground.

Tactical decision to slow way down and try to not walk. Wanted first mile to be ~10:00, but it was 9:00! Cut back further to 9:30 and held it around there until cramps started late and I slowed a lot over the final few miles. 83 degrees at the start of the run.
Course: Frst mile includes paved road and some hard packed dirt road that takes you through the back gate into Zoo Miami where you will run by various zoo animal exhibits. Following cones with lots of gentle turns to the left or right. Impossible to run tangents effectively. In and out of the Zoo at about the 4 mile mark for more animal exhibits. The run then goes through non-public areas of the zoo to another back entrance to Larry and Penny Park and from that point back to the finish area.
